Hello, I am a Seattle resident who would like to work as an English teacher in South Korea. I believe I am a suitable candidate for this position because I have a passion for teaching as well as the necessary qualifications listed for the position. In terms of my educational and professional background, I have a B.A. degree in English Language & Literature from the University of Washington Seattle campus, as well as a TEFL certificate from the International TEFL Academy. In June of 2022 I completed a 1 year contract teaching high school English in a place called Székesfehérvár, this is a small Hungarian city not far from Budapest. During the year that I taught overseas I gained an increased level of patience. I grew as a leader and learned to use strategies when dealing with difficult behavior, I mastered my organization skills, and I sharpened my communication abilities.

Prior to being a high school English instructor, I worked at Shoreline Community College as a writing tutor for nearly three years. The students I taught were primarily non-native English speakers of international backgrounds. A majority of my work consisted in helping students construct essays for their college classes or university admissions. I found it to be very rewarding to assist students from all over the world, it was a joy to help them achieve their academic goals.

Through these experiences as well as my travels through Europe, North Africa, India, and the Middle East, I have spent many hours learning from and communicating with individuals of various cultural backgrounds. These opportunities have helped me understand the world on a deeper level.

In addition to my international experience, I have worked in radio. When I was a student at the University of Washington, I was a DJ for the college radio station. I hosted my own show, this led to the opportunity I had as a volunteer at the Seattle radio station KEXP. And so it is with this history that I have been shaped into what I believe to be a suitable candidate for a teaching position in South Korea. During my studies at Nelson Mandela University, I was part of a student society which offered tutorial classes for learners at a local high School.
Furthermore in 2021 I was employed at Cebelihle Primary School as an Education Assistant/ Teachers Assistant.

During these two periods I learned to be able to work in a team. Also the were times I would be working independently, where I would be given a task of class management. Therefore I had learnt to be flexible because I would be working in different grades. So the whole experience has taught me a lot about working in a school environment.

Please accept my application for a teaching position in Seoul, South Korea. I have recently completed the CELTA course in Barcelona, passing with a ‘Grade B’, only given to approximately 10% of students. This course has kick started my enthusiasm and passion to continue my teaching experience and I am determined to progress and improve the abundance of skills learnt during those 5 weeks. During the CELTA course, I had the pleasure of observing experienced CELTA and DELTA tutors conducting brilliant lessons to give firsthand insight into how to correctly plan and execute English lessons. My progression was highly praised by both my tutors and peers, and each lesson I implemented the feedback given from my previous lessons. I taught 2 classes ranging from B1 to C1 level from students aged from 16 to 70. I believe I have learnt how to plan, deliver and execute high standard lessons ranging from vocabulary, grammar, listening and reading to speaking and writing aims.

I am interested in a teaching position in Seoul as I want to expand my teaching skills, immerse into a new culture, new traditions and learn a new language. I believe I will be a great asset to a Hagwon school as I am reliable, organised and a very hard worker. I put 100% into everything I do, as shown by winning the ‘Best Dissertation’ award during my university studies and my CELTA grade. I am a very positive and helpful person, and therefore believe I will be a great colleague to other teachers.

I am inspired to teach by my love of learning and communicating, and by the reward of helping others to develop their understanding of the world and their ability to express ideas, as well as for personal and professional development.

Studying philosophy and history, planning career and further studies options, and extensive wider thinking and reading developed my ability to understand, organise and communicate complex ideas clearly. Teaching English as a foreign language and charity fundraising work taught me the importance of clear communication, enthusiasm, exemplary body language, and frequent praise and encouragement. Proofreading and social media evaluation roles developed my sense checking and correction skills.

I love creating and developing lessons and educational materials that inspire and enable students to think, to connect the curriculum to the modern world and to their everyday experiences, and to develop cognitively and intellectually. I understand the value of helping students to structure their ideas and to organise their work with access to plenty of resources to help them to prepare for exams. I value not 'levelling-down' learning by providing sufficiently complex ideas, but balancing this with taking care with differentiation and to not leave any student behind.

Whilst volunteering as a Teaching Assistant, I acknowledged a student's interests and skill in an expressive piece of their writing and encouraged them to develop their ideas. Feeling that I had enthused them and boosted their self-confidence was a rewarding experience which boosted my self-esteem. It also reminded me that everyone is trying their best and of the value of recognising and supporting each individual's interests, efforts, skills and challenges. Whilst covering an English class, I noticed that asking students what they thought the characters in George Orwell's Animal Farm represented stopped them from talking and misbehaving as they began to focus their thinking and to learn.

Complex, verbal communication intensive environments motivate me and help me to focus. I am diligently self-analytical, and I am keen to develop my communication and class management skills as well as my understanding of diverse issues in education.

Although I have spent most of my life in South Korea, I left the country at a young age, and I studied in the United States of America for more than eight years. I am confident that I am capable of teaching English fluently at a Korean-English academy.

I already have three years of teaching experience in South Korea at an academy called “GE,” in Ilsan and “Sehan” in Daechi, where I was in charge of all of their upper-level literature and writing classes. Undoubtedly, both parents and students showed great affection and respect for me because of my passionate yet meticulous style of teaching. I dedicated immense amounts of time preparing for my classes, and everyone was able to hear my loud voice resonating across the entire building. Furthermore, I have always treated my students with sincerity so that they do not feel uncomfortable around me at all. I have always carefully prepared all of their daily, weekly, and monthly assignments.

Additionally, I am capable of producing my own R&D for literature courses as I have extensive knowledge about many books for all different AR-Levels. A lot of my students were particularly satisfied with my literature classes as I dedicated a lot of time covering all of the symbolism and metaphor hidden in the book. Moreover, although I had to reject their offer regrettably due to military service, after I graduated from Columbia College Chicago, I had an opportunity to enroll in their Master's Program for Creative Writing along with 50% of scholarship, given straight from the University, so my expertise in writing is equally great to my understanding of literature. Therefore, despite my lack of experience teaching English in Korea, I still have full confidence in my ability to teach at your academy.

To conclude, I am willing to work with passion and dedicate my life to improving the students and the academy I will be working for. If you could provide me an opportunity where I can demonstrate my passion and experience in teaching, then I promise that I will not disappoint you easily.

I work hard and excel in leadership. I have always been good at English and learning languages in general, and I am curious to see if the sense of achievement and being proud of the students is the same as when I was teaching dance. I am familiar with South Korea's culture as I have been exposed to it through media and Korean friends for years. I adapt and improve quickly.
