Hello!

I am a determined, goal oriented, playful, and optimistic artist and educator, with experience in several roles in several industries. I am a graduate of the University of Cape Town, with a BAHons in Theatre and Performance, and a strong background as an artist, performer and writer.

My most recent teaching position was as an online English educator with a small independent tutoring agency called Easy English. I taught, at most, six children throughout the week. These were one-on-one classes, which I very much enjoyed. However, I believe children learn best in small groups, and would really love to engage with students in person. They ranged in age from 4 years old, through to 11 years old. I also enjoy employing singing, storytelling and play in my lessons, so I am suited to younger learners.

In my larger professional experience, I am a freelance artist and filmmaker. I am an experienced props artist and creator (for film and television) and a graphic designer and illustrator. I enjoy creating engaging visual stories, and am interested in writing a children’s book in the near future. I also have a strong leadership background, and am an experienced and capable team member. I enjoy fostering healthy community relationships, and am committed to developing local connections.

In pursuing teaching in a foreign country, I am after sharing my skills as an educator and artist with new communities, learning about how a local community engages with their children, and hoping to come away with a better understanding of myself. I aspire to be a competent, compassionate leader in my own right, and hope to learn from my experiences as an English foreign language teacher, how to mutually learn, share, connect and communicate.

My name is Nicole Celea. I’ve been formally trained by the International TEFL Academy with the required 200 hours, including 10 hours of online practicum. I have a Bachelor’s Degree from the City College of New York, focused in Marketing Communications and Psychology. I’ve worked in both New York City and Los Angeles as a marketing copywriter for 10 years.

Although I’m talented in what I do, I’m in a phase in my life where I’d like to push myself in a higher direction, intellectually. That’s why I’m drawn to South Korea. I feel that if I am to evolve in the best way possible, then I have to open myself to possibilities where the people are developed, respectable, and promote growth by example. I would love to see this part of myself and hope that I can provide students a role model through doing this.

I have a strong work ethic, I’m culturally sensitive and well-traveled, I speak 4 languages and learn new talents and skills quickly, as long as I’m provided the space to do so. Exemplary American citizens are rare, I’m aware, however I trust that I would be an excellent choice to recruit and would be of high value in China.

For the past 3.5 years, I have volunteered to support young learners between ages 5-11 with basic literacy skills, specifically reading. This has included children who are both native and non-native speakers with a focus to build confidence, vocabulary, comprehension and motivation levels to improve reading skills. I have worked with a number of schools across England and delivered 130 online reading sessions in 2024, some of these, whilst working full-time as a Senior Business Management Lead for a leading retail bank in the UK.

The results and my enthusiasm for developing reading skills has been proven. In 2024 alone, I was asked by 6 schools to extend my support given the impact this had in the pupil’s development. This included a SEN (Special Educational Needs) pupil for whom I had to think creatively to engage the pupil adequately with different materials and games to their ability. In addition, I have dealt with behavioral issues and received feedback from the school that my approach and teaching techniques were working well. The teacher spoke to me directly and said, ‘I don’t know what you’re doing with him but he really enjoyed the session, please continue’ and this was following what I thought was a rocky start. This proved to me that I can be patient, dynamic, responsible and cheerful when needed.

I build relationships and engage very well with people from all age groups. By using my intuition and emotional intelligence I am able to offer guidance, empathise and offer support in many different areas. I have done this in the workplace equally, if members of my own team have needed clarity or additional support I have provided this in a professional manner and with due care. I am also very intuitive as to when someone needs help but is too shy to ask and offer support on a 121 basis.

In the initial stages with a new pupil, the role I play often starts with a firm but friendly tone to instil discipline towards reading though this is very much balanced with a collaborative approach in terms of materials that will be used where the pupil will have an active part to decide this. Throughout the reading programmes, I will play different roles from participant to teacher or even listener.

I am often described by my own younger members of the family as a fun and caring person. However, I am able to balance my assertiveness skills with setting clear boundaries.

My previous line manager has described me as reliable, trustworthy and a self-starter. I can be given briefs which are unclear and ambiguous but I will always find ways to deliver results. This will mean I engage many different people to either work out what I need to deliver or seek support to deliver the results.
