I have volunteer experience as an Au pair for a year, guiding two children under the age of 10 with their English homework and lessons. It allowed me to gain knowledge of lesson planning and class organization. I highly enjoyed my experience with teaching young children.

Hello, my name is Valerie and I graduated from university in 2017 with a degree in Classical and Archaeological studies. My first language is English and I have always been educated in it. moved to England several years ago to live and complete my studies. Currently, I am in Korea, having moved here 3 months ago to work at a hagwon.

While I currently work as an English Instructor at a hagwon, I did work in education prior to coming to Korea. This was as a 1-to-1 Learning Support Assistant to Visually Impaired Students. I did a lot of specialist adaptation and this kind of work is what made me want to continue working in education as it brings me joy to see students improve.

I have a range of interests outside work. One of my main interests is visiting museums, stemming from my love of history. Another hobby of mine is cooking and other interests include a range of sport including fencing, archery, skiing and kendo. Furthermore, as history is one of my passions, I have volunteered in a library close to home as well as participating in an archiving project with the National Archives.

In addition to these interests and passions, I have developed various skills throughout my education and employment. These skills include critical thinking, communication and presentation. As well as this I am a friendly, hard-working and organised person who does not give up easily until the task is completed to a standard that I am satisfied with.

I am passionate about education and cultural sensitivity and I a strong desire to make an impact on student's lives through language learning. I love traveling and meeting with new people and learning about their different cultural backgrounds.

I currently hold a 4 year Bachelor of Health sciences in Environmental Health which I obtained from Durban University of Technology. I also completed a 120h TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate with TEFL Universal.

I’ve worked as an Environmental Health Practitioner at the Airport where I was constantly interacting with passengers from different nations and helping them out with health protocols midst Covid 19 pandemic. I was also tasked with facilitating health educational programs among Airport employees and stakeholders. In late 2022, I was presented with an opportunity to work as an education assistant in my hometown primary school. My tasks included: supporting teachers with lesson planning and preparations as well as supporting the main teacher in managing behaviour in the classroom. This is where I got the opportunity to learn classroom and young learners behavioral management skills.

Although the above experiences may be less related to the ESL teaching industry, I believe that I can apply some of the relevant skills that I acquired from these two workplaces. Those skills include communication, interpersonal, presentations, creativity, report writing, classroom management and organizational skills.

South Korea especially stands out to me because of their rich cultural heritage and diverse traditions. Therefore working in Korea will provide me with an opportunity to be working while traveling and experiencing a different culture in another country.
