During my first year of university I taught an after-school debate club at two different secondary schools. Even though some of the students I taught were older than elementary school children, the skills I acquired are transferable to this new ESL teaching role. These include being able to maintain discipline and control over a class, breaking down difficult topics so that they are easier to grasp and building a strong rapport with students.

One of the modules on my TEFL course was teaching young learners. Here I learned the differences that arise when it comes to teaching younger students, from learning styles to life experience and motivation. I am aware that injecting humour into my lessons as well as creating fun and engaging activities is crucial to the learning process of young learners.

For me, there's something special about seeing a student go from having little to no knowledge about a topic, then seeing the light in their eyes as they begin to understand and develop their confidence. This is one of the things that makes me passionate about teaching language.

I admire anyone who is multi-lingual or is learning a new language. As a teacher, this automatically means that I will admire my students simply for making the effort. I know what it is like to learn a new language not just from my experience learning French in school, but because I am currently also learning Korean.

From K-pop to K-dramas, amazing food that fosters a sense of community to stellar skincare products, there's so much to love about South Korea and its culture. The language alone is evidence of how important respect is to the country. While celebrations like Seollal and the recycling system show the peoples reverence for nature and taking care of the environment. I recently completed a 168-hour Level 5 TEFL course from TEFL.org. South Korea is known to be a beautiful yet cultural and quite tech savvy country. I am an English and Theater student at Jacksonville University, graduating this April 2022. I have tutored on my campus, editing essays and helping students analyze their writing styles. My 120-hour TEFL certification provided me with a solid understanding of grammar and core teaching strategies that I have been able to bring to life in fun, informative and progressive lessons. I recognise the importance of adaptability and flexibility regarding classes of different sizes and ages. As a teacher I can follow a curriculum and supplement with added resources as well as creating my own lesson plans and activities. During my most recent teaching position, I taught a mixture of large classes and smaller classes (including one on one) and was able to help them improve proficiency across reading writing speaking and listening. Due to the ongoing repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was also able to adapt lessons designed for a classroom with great success to be taught online via zoom.
Alongside grammar-based lessons, I am also interested in teaching more conversational based English as an excellent method of tailoring learning to the students requirements and allowing them to excel in areas most helpful to them. Furthermore, I would also really enjoy working with younger learners; teaching captivating lessons that inspire another generation of English language speakers.

In 2020 I completed my PGCE at the University of Cumbria and obtained qualified teaching Status. During my teacher training year I worked within all primary school year groups, from nursery up to Year 6. Since completing my PCGE I have worked as a Year 5 teaching assistant (TA), a Year 3 class teacher and spent 6 months volunteering as an EFL teacher for adult learners in Sri Lanka.

I have worked closely with many children who have SEND and EAL, these experiences have allowed me to further develop my own communication skills so all of the children in my class could access and learn from the lessons I delivered. It also taught me the importance of differentiating work for my class, so all students can learn and be challenged at an appropriate level for them – this was especially useful when I worked in a mixed Year 3 and 4 group during my teacher training. I have also had experience working with children who have moved on from behavioural units into mainstream school so my classroom management and behaviour management skills are excellent. Due to my wide variety of experiences in the UK and Sri Lanka I have been able to develop many skills. I have taught both online and in person lessons to adults and children so my technological skills have vastly improved in the last year. I have also used both formative and summative assessments to help my students.

I have one years worth of teaching experience with a variety of age groups. My first teaching experience came when I was hired as a private maths tutor and for 9 months I taught one on one lessons with mostly GCSE students (aged 14-16) with a couple of group lessons. Here I learnt the basics of teaching and how much the way you teach can impact the students ability to learn. My second teaching experience was during my final year of university, during which I would take on first year students to improve their essay writing and research skills. I also helped to quell any anxieties students may have moving to university for the first time. My experience of teaching here was vastly different because it was online due to the pandemic. This teaching has prepared me for marking students work because I would spend a lot of time reading and suggesting improvements to students essays. And my most recent teaching experience was a short one month intensive teaching with a single student (aged 11) who had to pass entrance exams into a private school. This provided me the opportunity to learn how to quickly and effectively deliver a one to one lesson. The biggest skill this experience has given me is the ability to adapt to different students personalities and skill level.
