I have a 9 months teaching experience, it has been an amazing 9 months of my life and challenging at the same time.

This past year I graduated with three degrees in English, International Studies, and Japanese Studies. All three of these degrees have enhanced my skill set in a way that would greatly benefit an ESL instructor. My English degree honed my understanding of the English language, my International Studies degree nurtured an appreciation for and desire to learn more about cultures outside of my own, and my Japanese Studies degree gave me a first hand grasp on what it means to be a student of a second language. Ultimately, my studies provided me with both the tools and the empathy necessary to be an ESL instructor abroad.

Beyond my educational background, I also have spent the past year as an English instructor to children aged 6-11. I teach several courses ranging from Elementary English to Speechwriting and Storytelling. Since my lessons are remote, I am able to give lessons to students outside of the country including one student I teach who is from Malaysia. These experiences as an instructor have given invaluable insight into what it means to be an English instructor, as well as what it means to be an English instructor for students who come from countries where English is not the primary language.

In my free time I enjoy traveling. One of my favorite travel experiences was to South Korea. I was lucky enough to spend a summer abroad in South Korea while taking courses at Yonsei University. I managed to spend some time traveling around the country and enjoyed the experience immensely. This trip also has prepared me for the next time I am in the country, in respect to cultural differences and possible struggles as a foreigner staying in Korea.

I have previous experience teaching English to students of a wide age range in Moscow. I have also taught several students online. Currently, I am completing my 188 hour TEFL course with the aim to have this completed by the end of July.

I am a very driven person and love a new challenge. I've always been inquisitive and love to inspire others to pursue their passion. I take work very seriously as I like to be the best I can be in a role but I also cherish the importance of personal time. It is important to me to build close relationships with people and to get the most put of life; be it having fun, experiencing something new or learning a new skill.

Personally, I have a rather eclectic set of skills. I have a gift for languages, having a degree in German, Italian, and Russian, which I feel would be a useful asset as a teacher myself. I also have 8 years experience in hospitality, which has allowed me to hone my social skills, improve on public speaking, and allowed by confidence to soar. My experience working in sales has allowed me to read the subtleties in people and how to connect with them. On a more creative now, over the past few years I have taught myself to crochet – a skill I use frequently to relax and take time for myself.

I worked in South Korea before. My work experience was just over two years. I only returned to my home country to visit my family about one month ago, on the 30th of April 2022 to be exact. I would like to share that during my time in my University's scholarship organization, FOCUS, I have amazing work experience in terms of working with many people from different backgrounds. I earned many skills such as being able to speak in front of a classroom of students whilst proctoring a lesson plan made by myself and other mentors. Along with presentation and public speaking skills, I have also been able to develop my interpersonal abilities by having individual meetings with students in being updated on their academic work and university life. I have also been a part of the planning committee, hence making arrangements for events creating a welcoming community for first-generation students. I also feel my time put into my animation projects during my undergrad career made me very efficient as a in communication and time-management. During my most recent project, I was put as a senior lead for other sophomores and juniors, new to the work flow of creating an animation short. As a result of this, I was given the opportunity to teach and guide my team members into creating a successful project.
I also would like to note that I have just returned from a student exchange program as a student attending Soonchunghyang University. During my time in Korea, I was involved in a wonderful opportunity in networking with Korean University students that were interested in learning English. Being able to take on a new perspective for communication, I strongly believe I learned a great deal from the students I was connected with as we shared language and culture with each other. This program also lead to my love and respect for the country of Korea.

I have been a teacher for 3 years, and for the past 1 year I have been teaching English speaking, writing, listening, literature, etc. in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. I graduated from Rhodes University in South Africa with a bachelor of social science degree, majoring in psychology and sociology. During the time I was at Rhodes I served as a wellness leader at my residence which was a program aimed at promoting wellness through the student community for all students. My responsibility as a wellness leader was to act as the liaison between the student body and the division of wellness at Rhodes University. In 2016, I was also involved in a program called Inkwenkwezi where I volunteered in tutoring at a primary school in Grahamstown, which is a small town where my University is situated. My name is Lethuxolo Ndalenhle Thomo, but most people call me ‘Lethu’. I am from South Africa. I recently completed my postgraduate studies in Political Science with an undergraduate degree in Humanities, majoring in English Studies and Political Science. I also recently completed my 120-hour TEFL certification in the hopes that I can begin teaching English abroad.
