Having passed the 120 hour online TEFL course, I flew to Hanoi in January 2020 to begin an EFL teaching internship through Fluent Vietnam. This included teacher training in Hanoi, and further training through Dang Tuan Language Centre in Haiphong, using the Cambridge curriculum. I delivered ten 40 minute lessons with primary school students (aged 5 – 10), before schools closed across the country due to the Coronavirus pandemic. As Haiphong is located 1700km from the Chinese border, I made the difficult decision to cut the internship short and fly back to the UK early February.

However, my time in Vietnam proved that I was passionate about teaching, and that I was able to manage large class sizes (30 – 50 pupils), with support from a local teaching assistant. Although flashcards and worksheets were provided, the lesson plans were my own, and I was able to adapt lessons to suit the varying abilities of the students. Having come from a youth theatre background, I tend to use physical games and exercises to manage children's energy levels, and to hold their attention span whilst introducing new language. Vietnamese children are highly energetic and competitive, so good behaviour was rewarded with a team game to finish the lesson.

The reason this vacancy appeals is the incredible opportunity to explore SK, whilst honing my teaching skills over the academic year. Having travelled to Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, I’m really keen to learn about Korean culture, taste the cuisine and visit the beautiful beaches.

What I can bring to the role is a confident and methodical approach to teaching, which allows the students to figure the language out for themselves, and apply it naturally. I have a clear English accent, which will be easy for the students to understand, but will also help with pronunciation.

I currently hold nearly 2 years of ESL teaching experience. I taught for 15 months in a language centre in Hangzhou, China. In this language school I taught students aged 2 to 15. One of my biggest experiences that I want to mention, that I did not expect, was when my professor asked me to teach for his classes. He did not like the subject of Statistic nor did he understand it well, it was a section in the curriculum though. He asked the class if anyone had taken Statistics before taking his class, which was research methods, and I was the only one who spoke up, so he had me teach the class and him the subject. After class he asked me if I had the time to teach the unit to his other classes, I agreed. It was one of my most enjoyable experiences and it got me interested in teaching in the future.

The majority of my recent work experience is based in the legal sector working and assisting solicitors after completing my law degree. However, while studying I gained a lot of experience working in retail and in various bar jobs. I also have experience as a football referee which may be of particular use when teaching young children as I was refereeing mainly youth football. So I have some experience of managing children, being clear and also flexible in my approach to ensure they understand.

In terms of my personality, I am a very calm individual. I am clear and understanding as well as fair. I am a good listener and communicator – these are things I believe will stand me in good stead to be a very strong teacher. Not to mention, I have an extremely firm grasp of the English Language developed through my academic studies as well as in my leisure time as I am a very keen reader of non-fiction books. Whilst working for Binh Minh Education in Hanoi, I taught English at schools across the city, to students ranging from Kindergarten to Secondary level, and gained a wealth of classroom experience in this time.Teaching a class of five infant students in a morning, to over 50 crammed into a room that afternoon, means I had to adapt how I teach, and switch mentally between styles. As such, I’ve learnt to use my initiative, and most importantly, be a friendly, patient mentor to my students.

Though classroom sizes in Hanoi have taught me how to manage a large number of students, teaching online for the past several months with Palfish and Education First has allowed me to perfect a one-on-one approach. Only tutoring one pupil at a time gives me the opportunity to develop teaching methods that large class sizes don’t always give scope for, and try new things depending on the student’s level and needs. For example, using a number of drawing, writing, and listening activities to gage an individual’s learning style.

In addition to teaching experience, studying English at university has given me an in-depth knowledge of the English language, and how to use it creatively when planning lessons and activities for students. I further combined this love of language and teaching when writing content for the renowned i-to-i TEFL course providers.
