Phillip: United States: Aug 01, 2026

I have 22 years of teaching experience: 5 years at the elementary level and 17 years at the university level. My strongest attribute has always been my rapport with students. As my lifelong career as an educator would suggest, I have a passion for teaching. In addition, I enjoy the experience of cultural immersion. I have taught at the elementary level for two years in Medellin, Colombia (1991-1993) and have taught at the university level at Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea (2010-2012). I enjoyed my experience in Daegu immensely–so much so that I look forward to returning to South Korea once more. As I am now retired from academia, I look forward to once again teaching young children. I possess a wealth of patience when working with children, and both my vast experience and maturity help me to navigate with a calm demeanor any unexpected hiccups that may arise in the teaching process.

I find myself to be a very outgoing and fun person. I believe it is important to create a friendly, comfortable, and welcoming environment for students. English is a very hard language to learn, so it is important that children are confident in speaking up so they don’t feel insecure or embarrassed. With that being said, there may be times where students get frustrated and act out. I have the ability to de-escalate that type of situation. If an incident like that were to occur, I would quietly advise them to meet me after class or later in the day. Embarrassing a student is the last thing I would want to do as I don’t find it to be beneficial to punish in such a way. This is a first for everyone in the classroom, and they’re all in the same situation, so I’m happy to say that I am a very understanding person and have patience. A new language isn't something that could be mastered overnight, so there will be obstacles that students will need to overcome. I also pride myself in having the ability to adapt both inside and outside the classroom. Going from the US to South Korea is a big change and a completely different culture. With that being said, I am open to learning new things so that I could be a better teacher and create an approach to the content that would be beneficial to the students. Due to the fact that I am a big people person, I love to talk and learn more about others whether it’s their culture, beliefs, or things they like to do. I find it is important to know someone in order to be able to help them. I know in many countries, English is vital to learn because this is how people from different countries can communicate with one another. I believe that the students are our future, so it’s a blessing to not only help them, but I think I would help myself as well. Having said that, in my classroom, I want to make it fun for kids to learn because it will make them want to engage more and want to understand the content. I have found that I have the ability to read the room, because I know that the lessons can shift drastically. I would say that another strength of mine would be that I am able to take a step back if a lesson seems too advanced in order to prevent students from feeling burnt out or confused. By working together in groups or playing games that revolve around the content being taught, they are more likely to understand and retain that information because as I said, this is the first time for everyone and everyone is in it together. In order to thrive, it’s important for students to work together and work with me in order to be more comfortable in speaking out. Not only do I want to make it enjoyable for the students, but one of my strengths is building a high energy and immersive classroom environment, where students can feel safe and comfortable. I understand that working in a bilingual environment will require patience, listening skills, and a respect for their culture and work environments. Following that, a strength of mine would be the ability to communicate with others in a respectful manner. I know I have discussed my strengths and skills, but with that follows weaknesses. No individual is perfect, but I am able and willing to learn more to better myself. By learning more, I will be able to help the students more as well

I am known to be quite an outgoing and fun individual. My goal in teaching is to make the environment warm, comfortable and fun while also being able to help students succeed academically. by having a more welcoming environment where students are comfortable, they are more likely to engage in activities and retain information. I have the ability to remain patient, because I know this is new to these students and that English cannot be learned overnight. Many kids could become frustrated while trying to learn a new language which can lead to them acting out. If that were to occur, I have the ability to de-escalate the situation. Following that, I feel that if a student were to cause a disruption I would prefer to pull them aside quietly, or ask to meet after class to discuss the situation. Embarrassing a student in front of his/her peers will not only make them less motivated them but break their confidence. With that being said, a strength of mine would be how I approach situations. Another strength of mine is the ability to adapt, both inside and outside the classroom. Having said that, the content lessons could change depending on where the students are when it comes to understanding and retaining information. I am able to read the room and shift to an alternative if the lesson is too advanced. One of my goals is to make an immersive classroom environment where students can enjoy learning, whether it be through games or group work. This could help the students gain more confidence and feel more comfortable engaging. I am a huge people person, I love talking and getting to know others and their culture, beliefs, personality, etc. So, I find it is a strength to be able to communicate not only with students but parents, coworkers, etc. I am someone who is organized, this is important because it is vital I know what I am teaching and how to present it in order for it to be beneficial to the students.
