ESL Teachers

I am an enthusiastic and effective communicator having worked as a Police Officer for over 15 years. I specialised in working with children for four of those years and can work just as well unsupervised or within a team. I am now currently on a five year career break, and over the winter of 2018 I enjoyed the opportunity to teach English to Italian children and adults of varying abilities whilst living in Naples, Italy. I taught lessons within the Cambridge English assessment framework and would regularly utilise cartoon drawings to help emphasis learning points. Having had that experience I have since obtained my TEFL 120 hour certificate, and now wish to pursue my ambition to experience living and teaching within an Asian community. Most recently I challenged myself to walk the Camino de Santiago from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, where along the way I met many South Koreans who further inspired me to visit their country.
I am an active person, keen on outward bound activities whilst also very interested in art and culture.

Building on my array of experience from five years of university based on primary education and childhood studies, my highly developed skills as a former trainee teacher, my fluency in both English and Greek and my pure passion and enthusiasm for this particular profession, I aim to pursue a career as a teacher for students overseas.

Over the past seven years I have worked in various positions alongside young people and children, equipping me with an array of relational, enthusiastic and versatile skills. Furthering my experiences with various teacher training placements in multiple settings, and my studies surrounding young people as a whole, I have become the understanding, positive, approachable and curious individual I am today. I have also been able to build a substantial amount of knowledge and experience of the education sector. Moreover, given the opportunity to grow up on the island of Cyprus and live there for ten years until I returned to the UK for university, has vastly broadened my horizons, opened my mind and improved my language skills and respect for local culture.

With a bubbly personality, a friendly disposition and the ability to use diplomacy and nonjudgmental behaviour in all situations, I am an easily approachable person and thus work well with others as well as alone. The opportunity to help contribute to raising a student’s aspirations, knowledge and motivations is very exciting to me as not only does that encapture the career path I am aiming to go down, but I also would take great joy out of it on a personal level. The learning experience varies from person to person, from culture to culture, through listening, observation, encouragement and personal experience. I find this process absolutely fascinating. I pride myself on my interpersonal skills and capacity to work well under pressure. My experiences in various positions and settings, working with a plethora of people, my great enthusiasm to have a career helping young people, my flexibility, linguistic skills, and hard work ethic make me an ideal candidate for this position.

I have worked for Apollo English in Vietnam for a year as a full-time teacher, teaching kindergarten though secondary courses. Additionally, I am trained as a journalist and have great communication skills. I work well with others and when I encounter problems I always adapt to find a quick and peaceful solution. I would also say that I'm a very hard worker and I enjoy teaching children and interacting with new people. I'm very excited for this opportunity and I hope to speak with you soon.

Having taught English as a Second Language over the past year between Vietnamese schools and online adult education for Chinese students, I have not only grown comfortable with teaching ESL as a subject, but also am familiar with the different needs of students of all age ranges and the various skills specific to each.

My education consists of having graduated with high honors with a degree in English, creative writing, a skill-set that has made me excellent at critical thinking, rhetorical strategies and the precise theory and application of written English. I have also received high reviews from my current students for my excellent English pronunciation and accent and have been featured in voice-over work for various Vietnamese marketing campaigns.

Within the classroom I prefer a trusting atmosphere with students at the secondary level or above, looking to meet them halfway with their own interests to motivate them with relevant conversations and lessons in English that not only grab their attention but push them to think critically in a second language–a skill in itself. For younger students, constant engagement and patience is necessary to create an environment where they can be comfortable learning in order to gain the trust needed for quality instruction.

Highly qualified with substantial experience in leadership, management and teaching in educational institutions, I am committed to providing high-quality education for students with the ability to collaborate harmoniously with the governing body, staff, students and their parents and achieve set goals. With experience as a head teacher in different institutions I have successfully motivated staff towards greater achievements, ensured standards of learning and developed my own leadership and teaching abilities while doing so. I have had experience of English language teaching since 2007 when I began to study the Trinity TESOL programme at the University of Exeter as part of my undergraduate degree. I have subsequently taught both adults and children across the globe in Latin America, the UK and Vietnam. I love teaching English and helping students build their confidence and reach their language goals. I have a friendly, approachable and optimistic personality and use this to facilitate my English lessons and to build a positive rapport with students. I am hard-working, committed and creative and have managed to successfully create engaging English lessons for hundreds of students over the last 12 years. My most recent position was a full-time teaching job in Haiphong, Vietnam where I taught students aged 3 and upwards. I also ran a 3 month summer drama group for students lacking in confidence. I love encouraging students to come out of their shell and become more confident with their English. I have recently completed a Masters degree at the University of Bristol in Education (Teaching and Learning Pathway).

Ever since high school and college (a levels), I have participated in many voluntary work in different schools in order to gain experience with children. I have a variety of experiences with different children (of different age, race and abilities) as I have worked as a nursery practitioner, supply teaching assistant and crèche assistant. Along with experience with children, I have worked a few part time jobs in retail serving customers at all ages. I would consider myself as a hard working individual who is reliable and trustworthy.
I have a positive and open minded outlook in life with a positive and bubbly personality. Additionally, I am easy going, considerate and thoughtful. In terms of skills, I have great communication and language skills as I am fluent in English and Cantonese Chinese, at an intermediate level in Mandarin Chinese and beginners level in Korean.

Wrote and edited ESOL books with a group of editors for YBM/Si-Sa-Yong-O-Sa/ELS in Seoul. Interviewed prospective new teachers, observed and evaluated teachers, and facilitated teachers’ meetings as the Assistant Academic Director for Lado International College/Korea. Co-facilitated a teacher training session for the Lado Teacher Training Certificate Program (TTCP), and co-authored the Training Manual for the Lado TTCP in Washington, D.C. Facilitated and co-facilitated Training of Trainers (TOT) workshops on a nonformal basic math education program as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal, West Africa. Native English speaker. Something I have always wished to do is to help others. Being able to share knowledge with others and gain a lot in return, excites me. Seeing people being happy and knowing I was the reason for their happiness, is something I always dreamt of.

I have a strong desire for teaching. Being interested in a lot of foreign tv shows, films and music, I knew that languages would be the area I would like to teach in. I recently completed a TEFL 120 hour certificate and would love to put the knowledge I have gained from studying, into practice, gain valuable experience, and become who I have always wished to become.

I have work experiences of helping out in a nursery and a primary school. Those experiences opened my eyes to the world of teaching and gave me a desire to want to teach. Seeing the teachers at the primary school teaching, and seeing the children's joy and happiness about learning new things, made me happy and motivated. I have two nephews who are of primary school age. Asking them about what they have learned at school, and seeing them talk happily and positively about their teachers further adds to the passion and desire that I have to help others, specifically, through teaching.

I have some knowledge of the South Korean culture, by watching tv shows, listening to music, reading websites and forums for around 2 years and as such have been very interested in visiting the country. Being able to not only visit, but to work in South Korea is a once in a lifetime opportunity and to have that opportunity, excites me. I have also recently started learning Korean and would love the opportunity to see the language being used/gain knowledge first-hand.

What I would bring to teaching are my best qualities, kindness, patience, optimism and always having a smile on my face. Being a teacher is not easy, it is something I am prepared to work hard to become, and is something I wish to do for the rest of my life.
