With one year of teaching in South Korea already established under my belt, I can confidently say that I am familiar with the world of South Korean academies. Additionally, as my previous contract worked closely with Elementary and Middle School aged students, I have experience with building a strong rapport with students along these age groups. My personal teaching philosophy aligns with the idea of using textbooks as a tool, but to not rely on them completely — that in order to learn a language, they must begin thinking in that language. Thinking in English – when paired with activities, pop culture, team-building projects, and creative outlets – allows the brain to feel more comfortable with a structure that had previously been foreign. Thus, I love to enter the classroom by having basic conversations with my students, engaging in their shared interests and using them as leverage during lessons, and implementing task-based learning methods that allows them to gain confidence in English.
