Since the age of 12, I've been passionate about helping ESL learners grow more comfortable with the English language. I started tutoring other peers and young children at the age of 12 in English, and fell in love with teaching. In college, I studied elementary education for a semester, but quickly realized what I want to do is teach in my birth country, South Korea. I stopped studying elementary education after the semester finished because it was focused too heavily on teaching in the United States. Instead, I dedicated my time and energy into studying English as my minor. English has always been my favorite subject in school as well as the subject I had the most talent in. Throughout elementary school, middle school, high school, and college, I worked with international students, especially Korean students, to edit assignments and papers, and explain grammar concepts.

I have a very outgoing and optimistic personality. I throw myself completely into things that I am passionate, and love to dedicate time and attention to details. I'm someone who is happiest when surrounded by people, and I love to work quickly, but carefully. I've always been the one who finishes tasks the fastest, but not by sacrificing quality.

– I have experience working with children from my part time job (during university holidays) at KidZania London. Here, I educated children (aged 4-14) regarding various roles and jobs that they can do as adults in entertaining and imaginative ways. The skills I adapted in my time here could be easily transferred to the teaching methods I have learnt with TEFL Org and allow me to teach English to young learners and teenagers in fun and innovative ways.

I am not one to blow my own horn, but if I must define my strengths, I would guess that they may include strength of mind, determination, and persistence. These strengths are the culmination of experience in business at major companies in publishing, such as McMillan and Simon and Schuster, in marketing, in sales at HP, and in other customer-centric roles at other major companies. My experience as a small business owner showed me how it feels from “the other side”- the place where management sees the world and left me with a well rounded view of the workplace.

Some of the soft skills I acquired have been perishable, but I strive to stay fresh through constant interaction with working professionals daily. These skills include reframing those awkward moments, formal business etiquette, and presentation skills. Relevant task skills include holding my TEFL, freelance teaching experience of over one and a half years and tutoring specific individuals for over one year.

Korean language specific skills include the Korean voiced and unvoiced “th” sound that everybody seems to have a problem with, and difficulty with nasalization of certain vowels before nasal consonants. This give the L1 Korean speaker an overly vocal sound when speaking English and can be described as sounding “tough”. I work to help my students through that and improve their articulation.

From June 2018-February 2020 I worked as an English Teacher in Beijing, China, thus giving me nearly two years of experience. During my time in Beijing, I learned the challenges and joys of teaching English to students as their second language. I believe a student is best engaged and learns effectively when they are developing intellectually, emotionally, and physically. By focusing on whole child development, the students will get more out of each lesson, as no area is being neglected. Because of this, I strive to make each one of my lessons fun and engaging for the students, and make my classroom a safe and inviting place for students to be themselves. To make the students comfortable, I always greet each student individually and practice patience, especially when students are struggling with the material. Having patience with young learners is critical to their success, and perhaps one of my most valued strengths as a teacher. In addition, I make my lessons engaging by incorporating games and interaction in my lessons. I enjoy doing activities in my lessons that involve all types of skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I do my best to incorporate multiple skills at a time, so children are continually challenged throughout the lesson. Because not every student learns in the same way, I try to vary each activity to best cater all students. For example, I believe each lesson should contain activities that include things for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. Some lessons will include games that get the children up and moving, some include songs and chants, and some may be focused on drawing and using fine motor skills with craft projects. I enjoy diversifying my lessons so each day provides something new and exciting.

My academic training and eight years of experience teaching K-12 students and adults in a variety of settings, as well as university students preparing for graduate school admission, has prepared me to be a highly effective instructor. In addition to teaching English Language Arts at a charter school in Baltimore, I am also the Gifted and Talented Learners Lead. Moreover, as a former English teacher in New York City and Korea, I have experience teaching a diverse, tech-savvy student base.

Beyond my teaching expertise, I also have written several papers on the issue of ENL/TESOL education, both in the United States and globally. My research has informed my instruction, which allows me to better serve my students by understanding the unique position of a diverse student body. I have extensive experience incorporating community outreach into my classroom and my curriculum. For example, as an ELA teacher, I led a mini-unit on civil rights, using my knowledge in educational theory and differentiated learning. From those lessons, my students spent some time writing letters to their congressional leaders, advocating for more responsive leadership. Also, while teaching in Korea, I developed speaking lessons to aid my students in applying for jobs in the United States and Australia, mainly based on the TOEIC and IELTS exams. I truly love discovering ways to integrate cultural relevance into my lesson plans, and would like to continue this process.
