I am a motivated and passionate English instructor with hundreds of hours working, teaching, and communicating effectively with non native English speakers. I have excellent written and interpersonal communication skills in English and am an experienced cross-cultural communicator with a passion and drive to help students succeed in learning and speaking English. I have a background in cultural exchange programs that goes across many different cultures and possess good leadership skills. My classroom experience in English teaching is little to none, but I have engaged in tutoring sessions and one on one development. I'm very attentive to the demands of others. I'm flexible, patient, empathetic, and adaptable in accommodating the needs of others and am determined in helping them succeed. I don't have any background in the Korean language or culture but am willing and eager to learn. I am very cooperative and team-oriented and work well with young children as well as adults. I consider myself as having an English proficiency that is higher than most whom speak English natively.

I have over 3 years' teaching experience with students aged 5-18, but I specialised in Secondary (11-18) education for my PGCE course in 2019. I am predominantly a Music teacher, but completed a 120-hour TEFL course and have worked with EAL (English as an Additional Language) students both 1-on-1 and as part of my wider teaching experience. Even though English is my native language, I speak conversational Korean and am semi-fluent in French and Spanish.
I enjoy travelling and learning languages, having taught myself basic Korean after becoming interested in Kpop in 2015. I then chose to study at a Hagwon in Cheonan during August 2017 and have been back to Korea twice since – in 2019 and 2024. I am not fluent (yet), but hope to develop my Korean language skills while teaching in Korea.
I believe that learning should be fun as our brains are more likely to take in new information if we are in a good mood and enjoying ourselves. I therefore strive to create engaging and entertaining lessons that balance technical information with practical, real-life examples. I have a bubbly and enthusiastic personality, and my students have commented on how much they enjoy my lessons and my style of teaching.

I've had 3-4 years (including my internship year) of teaching in classrooms at an elementary school from Kindergarten to 5th grade as a school counselor, where I taught students social-emotional skills. During my years in the classroom, I've implemented art, fun, music, and games into my lessons to it more engaging for my students while they express what they've learned through their creativity while they make the most of my lessons. Also, I've had almost 10 years of au pair experience in China during the summers where I live or visit a Chinese family and privately help and tutor English to their children.

When around kids, I am enthusiastic and I like fun, and I know that students like fun as well! I know when to flick the switch on and have an upbeat attitude and make my lessons as fun and engaging as possible. My active listening and empathy skills are high along with compassion toward my students and any job that involves them. I am a strong social and emotional support for the students along with English mentoring.

Lastly, I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology (Fayetteville State University), Master's Degree in Professional School Counseling (University of North Carolina at Pembroke), and I am TEFL Certified. During my time of tutoring/mentoring to Chinese children as an au pair, I've used my talent/hobby as a writer to help the children improve their English writing skills. For example, at the moment, we are working on a book project to make it more fun and exciting, and I assist with the grammar and sentence structure!

Holding a 120 hour TEFL qualification, I am currently teaching in Vietnam at a mix of public primary, secondary and high schools. I thoroughly enjoy this, and the variety of lessons to plan, as well as seeing the students progress from week to week. When planning lessons, I tailor these to the student's abilities as well as I can whilst following a set curriculum, and am sure to include games and activities that break down the students' resistance to learning what can initially feel like a very challenging language! I use a variety of props, games, quizzes and try to make lesson content as relevant to students, and as fun and educational as possible. I am very patient in my role, and seek to correct students pronunciation when necessary, or any errors, whilst still praising their progress and ensuring to the best of my ability that they realise mistakes are part of learning, and feel inspired to keep going.

Before teaching, I worked in theatre as a Development Assistant, raising funds for our young people's programmes, and organising events to bring people to the theatre. In this role, I also sharpened my literacy skills, as I did at university, achieving a First in English and Creative Writing (BA). Whilst in this role, I was also volunteering at Ministry of Stories, a London-based organisation that sought to encourage children not only to read well, but to write their own stories and use their imagination for good. Here, I was a facilitator-volunteer, primarily working with children aged between 6-10 years old, and also supervised some storyboarding workshops for secondary school aged children around different, typically gothic, themes. This was a role where my creativity was of service to others, and I saw children grow in confidence, which was extremely rewarding. In addition, I edited letters written from “monsters” to the students (Monster Mail), and I think this creativity goes a long way in making English feel more accessible, fun and useful for students. This in turn helps students open up and participate more in class.

Additionally, I have a background in customer service roles, which enabled me to better my communication. In my current teaching role, I teach several different schools and several different age groups at a time, often managing classes of up to 45 students. I am skilled at thinking on my feet when a planned activity isn't working for one class, and am keen to improve, discussing with other teachers ways they have navigated certain topics, vocabulary, or speech points that are hard for students to grasp. I reflect on the quality of a lesson and student engagement and optimise when beneficial for students. I enjoy finding solutions and I believe that my role as a teacher is to encourage students as well as correct them, make learning fun, and foster a sense of pride in their work, and confidence in their skills.

I would love to expand on my existing teaching experience and build a meaningful career teaching English abroad.
