I am writing this letter to express my interest in the ESL teaching positions available for late July, August and/ early September, 2024.

I am passionate about education and cultural sensitivity and I a strong desire to make an impact on student's lives through language learning. I love traveling and meeting with new people and learning about their different cultural backgrounds.

I currently hold a 4 year Bachelor of Health sciences in Environmental Health which I obtained from Durban University of Technology. I also completed a 120h TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate with TEFL Universal.

I’ve worked as an Environmental Health Practitioner at the Airport where I was constantly interacting with passengers from different nations and helping them out with health protocols midst Covid 19 pandemic. I was also tasked with facilitating health educational programs among Airport employees and stakeholders. In late 2022, I was presented with an opportunity to work as an education assistant in my hometown primary school. My tasks included: supporting teachers with lesson planning and preparations as well as supporting the main teacher in managing behaviour in the classroom. This is where I got the opportunity to learn classroom and young learners behavioral management skills.

Although the above experiences may be less related to the ESL teaching industry, I believe that I can apply some of the relevant skills that I acquired from these two workplaces. Those skills include communication, interpersonal, presentations, creativity, report writing, classroom management and organizational skills.

South Korea especially stands out to me because of their rich cultural heritage and diverse traditions. Therefore working in Korea will provide me with an opportunity to be working while traveling and experiencing a different culture in another country.

I am applying for a position as an ESL teacher thanks to my life-long interest in languages and linguistics, my passion to explore and learn about other countries, and my enjoyment of sharing knowledge with younger students. These motives have driven me to develop a number of relevant skills to the teaching profession, through my experiences over the last few years. The best example of this is undoubtedly my year (2021-22) working as an English assistant in the suburbs of Paris, which opened my eyes to the rewards of travelling, immersing yourself in another culture and language, and successfully helping young people gain a valuable skill: speaking English.

I would be a strong candidate for this role thanks to my relevant experience with both language learning and teaching, as well as with young people. As mentioned, I have already spent a year teaching English (more details in resume) and, in doing so, learnt to understand the challenges involved in the job. Furthermore, I have also worked with children of a variety of ages: while my teaching revolved around children between the ages of 14 and 18, I have also worked as a childminder with children aged 5-10, meaning that I have a good understanding of the varying needs of children of different ages.

On a personal level, I believe I am right for the job thanks to my patience, communication skills and enthusiasm, which are of particular importance when working with younger children. In teaching, patience is required to allow students time to take information onboard, with most unlikely to understand instantly. Good communication is important, especially when teaching in a foreign language, as students will likely need slow and clear speech to avoid misunderstanding and frustration. And enthusiasm is key to maintaining students’ interests in what you are trying to teach.

Finally, my skills and qualifications stand me in good stead for this role, as I not only have the experience of learning a language to fluency (French) myself, I also have a good understanding of the methodology behind language teaching. Firstly, I specialised in Linguistics in my degree, which taught me the intricacies behind second language acquisition, but more importantly, I have completed a 120-hour TEFL qualification, which has given me the necessary skills to put my knowledge into action. My name is Meg Lockwood, a Languages Graduate from the University of Cambridge, and I am writing to apply for the position of ESL Teacher as advertised on the GLOII Job Consulting website.

I have been interested in teaching for a long time, as I have personally always thoroughly enjoyed school. Knowing how this is, unfortunately, not the case for such a huge number of students has instilled in me a desire to contribute to the education system myself, and hopefully be able to change this step by step. I have a strong work ethic, confident speaking skills, and most importantly, a genuine love of interacting and working with young people.

I have experience teaching both Primary and Secondary age students, in a variety of school systems. I am a TEFL certified ESL teacher, and my particular areas of subject expertise are Modern Languages, English and Maths, but I am flexible and capable of teaching a broad range of subjects, as I achieved the top grades across the board throughout my own education (see CV). I am a self-motivated, positive and hard-working individual, which I think would enable me to excel in this role.

In addition, the intense, challenging and immensely pressured environment of succeeding at a high-performing institution like Cambridge has ingrained a keen ability in me to maintain the highest attention to detail, perfectionism, and importantly morale, even under strict time constraints and often mental pressure. This stands me in good stead to excel in teaching, a role which requires strong responsibility, consistency and self-discipline. Finally, although I’m British, I have actually grown up and lived in several different countries across the world: from Europe, to the Middle East, South East Asia, South America and recently Australasia. In this way, cultural and linguistic intrigue, as well as comfortability in adapting to new surroundings, have been a consistent part of my life. On top of being a key motivation to live and work in South Korea, and thus become acquainted with yet another part of the world, I believe this longstanding contact with a diverse range of peoples and societies has cemented my high capacity for cultural exchange, interpersonal skills, as well as universal respect. These qualities, which form the foundations of my personality, will reduce the potential for cultural misunderstandings that can potentially take place in any international workplace, but more importantly, enable me to understand and connect with my students a bit more organically.
However, I am of course still always willing to keep learning and adapting to all of the inevitable further experiences I will gain through this role.
