In my personal experience I feel that it’s often the case we often under sell ourselves when it comes to our experiences that we have in our different environments. I can’t describe my teaching Philosophy without talking and sharing my teaching experiences. My very diverse teaching experiences, be it the subject, age diversity, environment and even country are what has molded my teaching Philosophy. I knew from my final year in High School that all I wanted to do as an occupation was to teach. Educating in a classroom, teaching or coaching on the sports field I knew that I had to give back to the system that gave me so much. My first foray into education was when I was still studying for my B.Ed degree, I was appointed as an intern teaching Technology at Thomas College (some learners having learning disabilities). This first post taught me patience and passion for the Education Industry.

I relocated to Gauteng to finish my degree at Witwatersrand University. The next two post I would hold were at Greenside High School and Roosevelt High School. Looking back at my years spent at these schools I learnt a sense of maturity, responsibility and a sense of self-reliance and Work ethic. These traits I would grow into because I was put into positions of responsibility and accountability, I was grade subject Co-Ordinator. Thus I would design and structure the syllabus, set exams, tests and other activities used for results. Unfortunately that would be the only growth for me 5 years at Roosevelt, I was never allowed to teach Matrics. This then lead to my next teaching lesson, the Middle East.

In the Middle East I was located in Oman at a school called Sabis Choueifat School. I would blessed with teaching 6-7 year olds English and Social Sciences. Learning total independence and Self-reliance in a new country, that has a completely different culture and way of doing things to what I had grown up with. Returning to South Africa I completed an Advanced 180 hour Tefl course in Adult and Business online teaching. I taught at Curro Corps for 3 months and online a few times a week. I have learnt through all of these trials and tribulations a sense of never giving up and always rising to the occasion even if it seems impossible at the time.
In the last 8 months from September 2024 till May 2025 I have been teaching in Tripoli, Libya. This in its own right has been a very challenging and unique experience. The school Ihave worked at has lacked any real leadership and structure. Often times it has been a case of learning through trial and era. The learners have been very tough but through this I have adapted my teaching style and come up with various new methods to promote good behaviour instead of punishing learners. The learners have responded in the most postive way and have gone above and beyond to show just how incredible they can be. I have truly found a new outlook on what I am capable of when it comes to overcoming challenges that I face.

Through all my teaching experiences, opportunities and travels, I’ve found a way to clearly define who I am as a teacher and the philosophy I try to adhere to on a daily basis. My philosophy builds on the foundations of being entertaining and informative while developing as a teacher, with the ever changing landscape of technology we find ourselves in as teachers. With that being said I am resilient and will cope and thrive in any scenario that I am presented with, and will always stay away from being a chalk and talk teacher. I believe that education is fun, interactive and there for student and teacher to grow.

My name is Rebecca Romine, and I have been a third grade teacher at my local elementary school for the past 4 years, as well as a second grade co-teacher during the pandemic of the 2020-2021 school year at the same school. During my time here, I have gained experience in developing effective and engaging lesson plans that cater to the diverse learning styles of my students. I have been able to accommodate and scaffold lessons to meet the students' levels of understanding. My fellow teachers of the third grade team have described my teaching style as flexible, and they have said they're impressed to see students that typically struggle flourish within my classroom. My classroom vision is to continually build positive rapports with any student that walks through my door with the goal of making learning fun through teamwork and collaboration. Especially with younger students, it is important to remind them that they're never learning alone and that we are going to work to learn new things together.

During my contract at Cwmbran High, I worked with several classes, covering various educational and behavioural support needs. Much of my time was spent as ‘general support’, providing aid not only to the child I was assigned but to the whole class (dependent on the lesson and the needs of the children in each lesson). I worked closely with their teachers to ensure the correct support was given and to highlight what areas needed the most work, particularly with English and creative engagement.

During my internship in Australia, I was one of twenty youth workers who looked after up to one hundred and twenty children (from the ages of 11-18). I assisted in organising events and running 'small groups' of up to ten children.

During the pandemic, I also acted as the English teacher for my younger siblings and family members due to school closures.

I consider the strengths of my personality (and character) to be my resilience, my outgoing nature, and my overall adaptability. I am confident in my abilities to work with anyone and build meaningful connections. In my experience, I would say that my greatest strengths are the soft skills I have developed over the years as a mentor teaching majlis-style debate to young people from all over the world. Soft skills that include things like empathy, patience, cross-cultural communication and my flexibility when things don't go according to plan as well as my adaptability. From my time teaching English, I learned on the job how to enhance my delivery, tailor my lessons to personalise and cater to the needs of my students individual skill level and how to carry myself in a professional setting in a culture that was very new to me. Also, I would say based on my experience as an English teacher at a language exchange in Seongnam, my willingness to learn from others and use mistakes to improve and better myself to be the best I can be in everything I do would be a beneficial strength.

I am a friendly, hardworking, motivated, and reliable person. I have a lot of experience traveling and working with different types of people and in various circumstances. Currently I am woking in a school where I work with kids who are 13-14 years old. My main job is as a special circumstance aid to a 14 year old with autism but when he is in class I work with other students helping them with their work individually or in small groups. I also teach english to a student from China who recently moved to my town and was struggling in class. We will either work on her school work or I will create various worksheets on grammar and vocabulary that will help her assimilate in school. I do a lot of research on how to best work with different students as many of the kids I work with have various issues that sometimes require extra help such as trauma, autism, or ADHD. I also understand that each student learns differently and you have to be flexible in how you teach and listen to the student. I have also completed a 120 hour course for TEFL which I have put into practices at times when teaching English.
