I’m a British national who has been living in Seoul for 4.5 years. I have a degree in TESOL with Korean which means I possess both knowledge of how to teach the English language and of Korean culture. I also have a 130 hour TESOL qualification and have 2+ years experience working in Korea. I have taught every age group in Korea from kindergarten until adults and therefore have a thorough understanding of how to adapt teaching methods and materials to various age groups. I have a bright, friendly and patient personality and try to instil confidence first in my students as i believe self confidence is of the greatest importance when learning a foreign language. I am currently working in Digital Marketing, however after almost four years in the field, I have learnt that I would prefer to work in a position that is much more interpersonal, and people focussed. I have decided to pursue teaching because I had a very positive experience of education myself, so a career in education has always appealed to me. With my own academic background (Bachelors in English and Masters in Communication & Entrepreneurship), I feel as though I am well suited to teaching English.

Though I plan to change my career path, my current job had provided me with a great set of transferable skills. These include excellent verbal and written communication, creativity, problem solving, organisation, time management and management of a demanding workload. All of these skills would be essential in a teaching job.

I also have experience with children, including childminding and mentoring children in an after school homework club therefore I know that I enjoy working with and being around children as I am an energetic, enthusiastic and fun person. I was born and raised in London, United Kingdom and I have a Bachelor's Honors Degree in Magazine Journalism and Feature Writing. I have a TEFL/TESOL certificate to teach English as a foreign language. In my own time I run a travel blog and YouTube channel and I have published an E book on Amazon.

As for my experience, I have recently obtained the certificate last year and I am currently teaching Japanese students online as an English tutor on the platform Native Camp. I have years of experience working as a journalist, freelance writer and in customer service.

As a graduate from the University of California, Irvine with a Bachelor of Social Sciences in
Sociology and currently working as a Research Data Coordinator for UC Irvine Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, I highly look forward to working as an English Instructor.

Currently, I work as a Research Data Coordinator where I provide comprehensive data management for a research portfolio of Phase I-IV cancer-related protocols, provide accurate collection and coordination of data submission to study sponsors, assist the principal investigators and study coordinators for all data management aspects of cancer-related trials, and communicate with multi-level networks. Even though I do not work with the patients directly, I take pride in making a difference in the lives of others by working behind the scenes with the team members to help the Cancer Center operate.

Before I worked at the Cancer Center, I worked as a Customer Relations agent at Asiana Airlines. As a customer relations agent, I recorded and responded to customers’ compliments, inquiries, suggestions, and complaints registered through the online customer service feedback system and agencies. By working at Asiana Airlines, I learned about the importance of customer service and learned how to adjust to the company culture.

In addition, I have experience working at a nonprofit organization called Project Kinship where I mentored high school students living in underprivileged populations by conducting self-governed tutor sessions every week. As an academic tutor, I learned how to prepare the class and teach the students effectively on their academic standing.

The majority of my experience within the UK education system is with young learners (Early Years, Reception and Key Stage 1), and with children with special or additional needs.

I am currently undertaking an 120 hour TEFL course, with an additional module for teaching young learners. I want to be as prepared as possible for teaching English as an additional language, arming myself with as much information and practice as I can. Therefore ensuring I provide children in South Korea with the most relevant and appropriate lessons from the outset.

I love to bring subjects to life. Making learning a hands-on experience. Giving the children the power to actively engage with a topic. Utilising resources and different learning environments, such as sensory toys, songs, music, role play or outdoor learning. I couple this with formal, comprehensive, measurable activities which ensure that progress is recorded, reviewed and monitored.

I believe this multi faceted approach gives children the best opportunities to reinforce their learning and understanding, whilst also making learning relevant and relatable. I am also keen on combining group activities with individual learning to help support social skills, particularly with language acquisition and development. Talking is important.

I practice what I preach. Every new day provides us with the chance to learn something new. I don’t think learning ever leaves us. Whether this is trying a new recipe, reading a book, having a thoughtful discussion, or learning a new language. I am personally very early in my journey with learning Korean, but I am really enjoying the experience.

Throughout my working life I have worked within large and small teams. Working together with colleagues is something I have always enjoyed. Solving challenges together and working towards a unified solution. I also enjoy working independently and focusing my energy on a specific activity or task.

Every child is unique. Children learn at different paces and in different ways. Being adaptable to the needs of the children is one of my core strengths. I am highly energetic which came in handy when I would teacher my younger students aged 2 and a half and 3 years old. I feel as though I am a great listener and able to openly admit when I am not sure about certain topics which came in handy when I was teaching my pre-teens and teenagers aged 12 to 16 years old. I enjoy bringing out the best in people and giving them consistent reassurance and a thumbs up when I notice that they are trying and that also came in handy with my middle school aged students when it came to them doing oral presentations or debates. I am disciplined, hard-working and I am always up for a new challenge. I gained my teaching experience at an amazing training center called English First (EF), in Zhengzhou China. I worked there for two years and was offered a teaching job at an International school in the same city but when I had returned to South Africa to prepare my documents for the position, the pandemic halted my process.

Before working in China I was part of an NPO called R Shape that focused on providing free tutoring and mentorship to high school students from grades 10 to 12. And during my studies I was the class representative for 3 years and was the Academic officer in my department's school council in my last 2 years. I also served on the Advisory committee in my final year. These opportunities allowed me to be around students and gave me skills on how to listen to their problems and strategize with them on how to help or solve their academic issues and sometimes, personal issues. It also taught me how to think on my feet and be able to adapt when things don't go as planned.

My old job and the new job I managed to obtain a contract for eagerly are waiting for me to start but seeing that China is nowhere near allowing South Africans back in I am here searching for positions elsewhere.
