I am an enthusiastic and hard-working individual with a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Sheffield. I initially undertook the course with the intention of teaching in the future, and my studies have reinforced that desire. I quickly became passionate and excited about the knowledge I acquired, and keen to impart it, which I did at university in regular presentations. This recently led me to attain a 120-hour in-class TEFL certificate.
One of my passions is the English language, of which I shall remain an undying student. It is so brilliant and vast; so packed full of history but also constantly evolving, that teaching it to beginners and native speakers alike would be a truly rewarding career.
I have a decade of experience working with and guiding children of all ages, since I became a qualified football referee in 2012, and a certified athletics coach shortly afterwards. The former position has occupied a great deal of my time, and I discovered I had a talent for being authoritative and even-handed. I developed an ability to instinctively judge when to be convivial and supportive, and when to be serious and uncompromising.
During the Covid pandemic I worked full-time in a supermarket. The job was unstimulating but my time there did demonstrate my ability to work hard. I cycled seven miles to and from work, often beginning work at 3am. But, more importantly, I used every spare moment outside of this job to study, read and volunteer.
I have been learning Italian throughout the last year and have made considerable progress. This hobby is invaluable in understanding how best to teach English, because I can appreciate the difficulties and the joy of learning a language. For instance, I appreciate the value of repetition and of returning to topics covered in previous lessons.
In 2019 I organised a 1800 kilometre cycle from Budapest to London, which a small group and I completed in three weeks. The trip demonstrated my organisational skills as well as my determination to see tasks through to the end. I believe the attributes I have developed over the past few years make me a strong candidate to teach at your school. I would be honoured to become part of your teaching team. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application.
