* 전반적인 경험 (아래에서 구체적 경험과 강의 스킬 공유할게요)

1. 공교육과의 콜라보

1) 고양외고 방과후 학교 (AP 역사 & 심리학)
덥고 추운 방학동안 동지애가 쌓인 학생들. 아담한 사이즈의 수업이기에 가능했지 않나 싶기도 합니다. (아래 설명드릴) 여러 메타인지 학습법이 지닌 현실적 가치를 검증받은 계기가 되었습니다. (방학 때의 방과 후 학교 같은) 특정 상황이라면 더더욱 자신감을 가지게 됩니다.

2) 자사고 장훈고 (영어 디베이트 클럽)
입을 떼기도 어려웠던 일부 학생들. 문법과 구문 공부에서 시작하여 독해와 듣기도 강화하여 결국은 말하기에도 자신감을 가지게 했던 그 때. 적어도 어학에선 모든 영역을 골고루 발달하려는 접근은 어학 마스터를 위한 선택이 아니라 필수였음을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 검증된 교육이론과 제 경험이 훌륭하게 현실적으로 결과를 낼 수도 있음을 증명한 계기가 되었습니다.

2. 사교육에서의 신조와 실천
의사 선생님과 (학원) 선생님들이 하시는 일을 비유. 그 중에서도 성형외과와의 비유가 제 경력과 경험을 요약하기에 가장 정확한 비유가 됩니다.

고객의 사정은 고려하지 않고 무리한 요구에 응하는 선생님들이 있습니다. 의사든 교사든. 제 경험은 (그리고 거기서 얻은 교훈은) 서로에게 좋은 선택이 있다면 강사로서 교사로서 이익이 되더라도 무리한 선택은 권고하지도 말자. 거기서 나아가 무리한 요구엔 솔직한 답변을 드리는 것이 옳다는 생각입니다. 그것이 결국엔 장기적으로 서로에게 좋은 일이라고 믿습니다.

무리한 수술/시술이든 성적에 대한 과욕이든 (무조건 거부하진 않지만) 현실과 이상의 타협을 제시하는 것이 의사든 교사든 모두 추구해야 하는 현명한 판단이라고 봅니다. 이상이 아닌 현실. 그게 이상에 다가가는 방법이 아닌가 합니다.

Personality

MBTI

혈액형과 성격의 이론이 휩쓸고 지나간 자리를 MBTI가 채우고 있습니다. 점성술에 가까운 혈액형 성격 이론. 예서 멀어지는 건 분명 발전입니다. 하지만 MBTI도 아쉬운 부분이 많으니까요.

논구술과 AP & IB 그리고 Academic Writing과 Debate를 가르치는 저. (이과를 등지고 온) 문과 사람이지만 과학적 사고는 포기 할 수 없습니다. 소위 Big 5. 성격이론에 대한 학계의 정설입니다. 신경성, 외향성, 친화성, 성실성, 경험에 대한 개방성. 이 다섯 가지 변수를 따지는 이론. 이를 지렛대로 삼아서 제 성격을 소개합니다.

이론이든 상식으로 보든 모든 면면은 그 자체로 긍정 부정은 아닙니다. 과하면 문제라고 할 수 있고 환경적 요소와의 적합성을 보는 게 옳다고 봅니다.

(어쩌면 이런 걸 따지는 게 성격을 가장 잘 드러낸다고 볼 수 있겠네요.) 장점으로 보자면 합리적 사고를 한다는 점. 단점이라면 부드럽게 넘어가는 게 없다. 이렇게 판단하실 수 있겠습니다.

# 1. 신경성

예민함의 척도로도 이해할수도 있습니다. 세심하다는 주변 평가가 적지 않습니다. 하지만 소심하다고 보실 수도, 디테일에 집착한다는 평도 무시할 수 없습니다.

악마는 디테일에. 디테일에만 집착해선 안됩니다. 결국 완벽주의는 현실과 타협을 할 수 있어야 합니다. 특히 대중을 대상으로 하는 영역에 있다면. 단, 어이없는 실수를 범할 땐 누구보다 저 자신에게 엄격하다고 자부합니다. 하지만 어느 정도는 타인에게도 적용될 수 있는 잣대.

꼼꼼하다고 자부합니다. 이는 장점이라 봅니다. 하지만 그렇지 못한 이들과 타협하지 못하는 지점. 여기서 생기는 마찰에서는 단점이 될수도 있습니다.

그러면서 습득한 조율의 기술이 있습니다. 데드라인이 금요일이면 마무리 담당을 자처. 마무리의 꼼꼼함이 부족한 이들에겐 초기 작업을 부탁하고 그들의 데드라인은 수, 목쯤으로 설정합니다. 다른 스타일을 조율하는 스킬. 각자의 스타일을 유지하며 장점을 극대화하면서 갈등을 줄이는 방향입니다.

Functioning Alcoholic이라는 표현이 있습니다. 중독이 있지만 잘 숨기는 사람을 일컫는 긍정적인지 부정적인지 모르겠는 표현.

저는 스스로를 Functioning Sensitive라고 표현합니다. 예민하지만 아닌 척. 잘 어울리는 스타일. 예민함이 단점만은 아니라고 생각하기에.

# 2-3. 외향성/친화성

사교성에 대한 두 변수. 묶어서 정리합니다.

(종교는 없지만) 법정스님의 말씀 하나 크게 다가왔습니다. ‘함부로 인연 맺지 마라.’ 앞서 말씀드린대로 마치 기자들이 취재원을 대하듯 ‘불가근 불가원’의 원칙을 지킵니다. 밀당의 미학. 너무 가까이도 너무 멀리에도 있지 말 것. 언제나 적당한 거리. 언제나 중용과 조율.

하여 소위 ‘인싸’가 되지 못합니다. 동료를, 학생을 사랑할 수 있다고는 약속드리지 못합니다. 하지만 적당한 거리에서 항상 신중하게 진중하게 다가간다는 것. 그래서 때로 부정적인 평가도 받을수도 있음을 고백합니다.

대신 신중한만큼 상호신뢰가 튼튼하게 갖춰진 관계 구축은 자신있습니다. 지인들은 얘기합니다. (언제나 자기 평가는 주변의 판단도 더해야 합니다. 객관성을 나름 담보하는 게 중요하니까요) ‘그렇게 다가갔다면 영혼까지 팔 수 있는 관계가 되었나보네?’

#4. 성실성

이전 직장의 동료 상사에게 구직자의 평가를 묻는 경우가 있습니다. 서양은, 특히 미국에선, 그리고 요즘 한국에서도 그런 문화가 확산중입니다.

‘이전 직장에 저에 대한 평가를 요청해보세요. 자신있습니다.’ 이런 당찬 구직자가 있기도 하겠습니다.

저는 그러지 못합니다. 단점도 있을 것이고 성적이 좋지 못했던 경우도 있겠죠. 그런데 다른 이유도 있습니다.

적어도 성실성에선 자신이 있습니다. 강의는 물론 회의 등의 미팅에서도 지각한 적이 거의 없습니다. 이 부분은 비교적 팩트에 가까우니 당차게 이렇게 말씀 드릴 수도 있습니다. ‘연락해보시죠. 주관적 평가는 몰라도 약속 시간 준수, 데드라인 이행 등 객관적 성실성 지표가 될 만한 부분은 증명해 주실 겁니다.’

그럼에도 걱정되는 부분이 있습니다. ‘네, 그 선생님이 완벽주의자 성향이 있죠. 그런데요. 다른 사람의 불성실을 못참는 성향이 좀 …’

약속 시간을 지키거나 교무실에서 전화통화 등의 예의를 지키는 것을 강조하는 게 완벽주의라면 완벽주의겠죠. 저는 상식을 지키는 일이라고 생각하지만요. 특히 교수부장 등의 역할을 할 땐 사기 저하될 요소를 방치하는 책임 방기는 해 본 적이 없습니다. 부하로서 예스맨 되기도 싫지만 상사로서 무책임도 있을 수 없는 일 였습니다.

성실성은 어느 정도 완벽주의의 척도가 되기도 합니다. 제 스스로에게만 적용한다면 장점으로 어필할텐데. 주변에게도 (제 기준에는 상식으로 보이는 시간엄수 등) 요구한다면 너무나 큰 단점이 될 수도 있음을 인정해야 하겠습니다.

역시 앞서 예민함에 대한 자백하던 기억이 떠오르네요. 아닌 척 잘 어울리는 특성. 강조하고 싶습니다. 넛지(Nudge)하며 자연스럽게 행동 유도를 하는 기술. Too Diligent but Functioning.

B. 위 스킬의 (이론적/경험적) 배경

핵심은 메타인지! (위 A에서 언급한 Skill을 통해 아마도) 제가 가장 잘 구현한다고 자부합니다.

1) Math is not a spectator sport. Neither is studying (many subjects in) foreign languages.
– 눈으로만 보는 공부는 필패. 배운 공식을 응용해서 문제를 풀어야 하는 수학! 영어도 마찬가지! 문법도 그러하며 주관식으로 평가할 수 있는 모든 시험들이 마찬가지입니다. IB, AP, SAT 모두 그럽합니다. 활용이 가능해야 합니다. Output으로 증명해야합니다.

2) Teaching is learning twice.
– 학생간 수준에 어느 정도 차이가 있다면 대안은 최소 2가지가 있습니다. 1) 질문이 많은 수업 (강사가 학생에게 설명을 요청) 2) 상위권 학생들이 나머지에게 설명하는 수업. 이 모든 것이 수단! 목표는 메타인지 상승입니다.

All these courses were for my career as a teacher who was given my goal and meaning in life and for the job I mentioned earlier. It can cover all classes, from SAT to AP Literature, and I am confident I can completely handle consulting on college admissions (admissions to Korea and the United States). Moreover, owing to my experience in several countries, including America, China, and even India, I am familiar with students at international schools. I can digest both classes and administration. My potentiality and ability are possible because it has been a process of many years of experience and self-development. If I co-exist with your school, I will do all these things to the fullest. My biggest strengths in relation to this role stem from previous experience I have had tutoring children in the UK, and the skills I have developed throughout my academic endeavours.

Tutoring experience –

In university I tutored students on GCSE English and History. This was a useful introduction into teaching. I now understand the importance of effective lesson planning, connecting with students on a personal level, and teaching students to think on their feet.

University experience –

I have developed a range of skills during my university degree which are relevant to a role teaching English. Two very relevant ones are;

Communication – I am a clear and effective communicator. My university degree has shaped my ability to select relevant information and present it clearly, wether in the written or verbal form. my experience tutoring has further developed this.

Work ethic – I am a very driven individual with excellent self-motivating abilities.

First, I am very friendly to every student. My students who are Korean sees me as a big brother or their uncle which makes studying with foreign students possible even though my English is not fluent.

Secondly, I have good comunication skill with the parents. I analyse student's performance and expain the results without any bias. Many parents like my Math consultations.

Lastly, I reckon I am a nice coworker because of my responsibility and sincerity.

I am a very experienced person when it comes to critical thinking and overall life experience. I can learn any subject quickly and efficiently and never get depressed when I make a mistake. Mistakes are just chances to learn and grow.

I have a very calm approach to teaching and I am able to observe all my students equally and can adjust my teaching according to the needs of my students.

I don't give up on students that have a difficult time learning a subject. Everyone learns differently and a lessons needs to provide various teaching styles in order to get to the most students possible.

I have Skills with MS Office, video and music editing, basic programming, and knowledge of the workings of computers.

I majored in Psychology and am skilled with applied psychology especially helping those suffering from anxiety, depression and various mental illnesses.
