ESL Teachers

I am a very enthusiastic, outgoing and confident person, with a passion for teaching. This confidence means that I am a very clear communicator, and I have been employed in many public-facing, and team-based roles. I am highly organised, a trait that I believe is crucial for teaching. I utilise this organisation regularly to create lesson plans, in my work as a personal tutor. I also understand the importance of varying my teaching style. My years of experience have taught me how to be patient with a variety of different learners, as well as how to discipline learners effectively to maximise their learning experience.

I have several years of experience teaching. I have worked for three years as a one on one tutor, teaching Maths and Geography to students aged between 12-16 for their exams. I also have experience teaching larger classes, and younger learners. At university I went to local schools to teach groups of primary school children, usually between the ages of 5-10 about conservation and nature.

I hold a first-class, bachelors degree in Geography from Durham University in the U.K. Additionally I hold a 120-hour Certificate for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. This qualification included modules on English grammar, English teaching methodologies, as well as techniques for teaching young learners and business English.

– Having studied English Literature at university, I have a strong grasp of the English language as well as how it fits in the wider contexts of modern society.

– I have experience working with children from my part time job (during university holidays) at KidZania London. Here, I educated children (aged 4-14) regarding various roles and jobs that they can do as adults in entertaining and imaginative ways. The skills I adapted in my time here could be easily transferred to the teaching methods I have learnt with TEFL Org and allow me to teach English to young learners and teenagers in fun and innovative ways.

– I spent a year studying abroad in Austria, meeting an array of people from different cultures and learning how to adapt to a different country's way of living with them. I also became an unofficial English tutor to many of my flatmates and friends as they often asked me to correct their english whilst in conversation, or help to look over their essays for any mistakes.

– Overall, I feel as though one of my biggest strengths is my positive and bubbly personality which gives me the energy and patience needed to teach.

-Having studied Anthropology and Sociology at university , I’ve learnt a lot about human culture and have been able to explore different societies and civilisations. This inspires me to travel and to expand my learning with real life situations.

-Whilst working in retail, I have become a Team Coach in the children’s department. Retail can be a fast paced environment and so I am flexible to things changing last minute and adapting towards it. Through this experience I have been able to create plans on how to best meet a child and parent’s needs and how to reach a solution which appeals to both.

-During the UK lockdown I had the opportunity to create a book club amongst my friends as reading is one of my great passions. This allowed a more structured debate and nuanced discussions about books and other media that we would not have had otherwise.

Although I was prevented from acquiring practical face-to-face teaching experience due to the imposition of the UK lockdown, I have experience of lesson planning and delivery gained both at university and during my TEFL course. Additionally, I have volunteering experience working with primary-aged children of a local school.

I am a committed individual who is passionate about supporting others. I strive for perfection when completing personal goals, but also take pride in encouraging and helping others to meet theirs. I am creative and energetic, which is essential when teaching young children.

I am a flexible, adaptable and used to facing daily challenges. My current workplace demands that I am organised and take initiative when completing tasks.

I am not one to blow my own horn, but if I must define my strengths, I would guess that they may include strength of mind, determination, and persistence. These strengths are the culmination of experience in business at major companies in publishing, such as McMillan and Simon and Schuster, in marketing, in sales at HP, and in other customer-centric roles at other major companies. My experience as a small business owner showed me how it feels from “the other side”- the place where management sees the world and left me with a well rounded view of the workplace.

Some of the soft skills I acquired have been perishable, but I strive to stay fresh through constant interaction with working professionals daily. These skills include reframing those awkward moments, formal business etiquette, and presentation skills. Relevant task skills include holding my TEFL, freelance teaching experience of over one and a half years and tutoring specific individuals for over one year.

Korean language specific skills include the Korean voiced and unvoiced “th” sound that everybody seems to have a problem with, and difficulty with nasalization of certain vowels before nasal consonants. This give the L1 Korean speaker an overly vocal sound when speaking English and can be described as sounding “tough”. I work to help my students through that and improve their articulation.

From June 2018-February 2020 I worked as an English Teacher in Beijing, China, thus giving me nearly two years of experience. During my time in Beijing, I learned the challenges and joys of teaching English to students as their second language. I believe a student is best engaged and learns effectively when they are developing intellectually, emotionally, and physically. By focusing on whole child development, the students will get more out of each lesson, as no area is being neglected. Because of this, I strive to make each one of my lessons fun and engaging for the students, and make my classroom a safe and inviting place for students to be themselves. To make the students comfortable, I always greet each student individually and practice patience, especially when students are struggling with the material. Having patience with young learners is critical to their success, and perhaps one of my most valued strengths as a teacher. In addition, I make my lessons engaging by incorporating games and interaction in my lessons. I enjoy doing activities in my lessons that involve all types of skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I do my best to incorporate multiple skills at a time, so children are continually challenged throughout the lesson. Because not every student learns in the same way, I try to vary each activity to best cater all students. For example, I believe each lesson should contain activities that include things for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. Some lessons will include games that get the children up and moving, some include songs and chants, and some may be focused on drawing and using fine motor skills with craft projects. I enjoy diversifying my lessons so each day provides something new and exciting.
