Working in educational settings has formed the majority of my working life. I have always loved working with children, watching them learn, develop and flourish.

I am currently employed in a very different profession, working for a large corporation in Medical I.T. I have learnt a lot from this industry and role, but I am keen to return to working with children. Education is where my heart truly lies and I would love the opportunity to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in South Korea. I am fascinated by Korean culture and would love the opportunity to work in such an innovative and traditional society.

I am passionate about providing children with the foundations to grow into confident, well-rounded, thoughtful individuals who are interested and engaged with the world around them. Teaching children to be able to question what we take for granted and what we think we know. To ask the difficult questions. Language forms the foundation for inquisitive minds to be set free.

We were all young once. The experiences, care, lessons and time that we invest in learners from day one helps to shape them into the best versions of themselves as they journey through formal education and beyond.

The majority of my experience within the UK education system is with young learners (Early Years, Reception and Key Stage 1), and with children with special or additional needs.

Working with children in Early Years settings has provided me with a strong foundation in teaching and supporting language acquisition for reading, writing and speaking. I have experience utilising multiple teaching methodologies to instill phonics comprehension as the building blocks for language development.

My teaching approach has always been child centered. Putting the child / children at the heart of every lesson allows them the chance to explore the subject, make mistakes, correct misunderstandings, practise and progress.

Teaching must be accessible to all children, and an inclusive classroom environment is critical. It is my responsibility to support them at every stage in their learning journey, to ensure they understand the subject matter and are able to confidently develop and build on prior learning.

I have a degree in Child Development & Education, coupled with Sport & Coaching Studies. I achieved an Upper Second Class Honours (2:1). I subsequently moved on to complete a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) focused on Early Years and Primary education. I achieved a final mark of Outstanding.

I am currently undertaking an 120 hour TEFL course, with an additional module for teaching young learners. I want to be as prepared as possible for teaching English as an additional language, arming myself with as much information and practice as I can. Therefore ensuring I provide children in South Korea with the most relevant and appropriate lessons from the outset.

I love to bring subjects to life. Making learning a hands-on experience. Giving the children the power to actively engage with a topic. Utilising resources and different learning environments, such as sensory toys, songs, music, role play or outdoor learning. I couple this with formal, comprehensive, measurable activities which ensure that progress is recorded, reviewed and monitored.

I believe this multi faceted approach gives children the best opportunities to reinforce their learning and understanding, whilst also making learning relevant and relatable. I am also keen on combining group activities with individual learning to help support social skills, particularly with language acquisition and development. Talking is important.

I practice what I preach. Every new day provides us with the chance to learn something new. I don’t think learning ever leaves us. Whether this is trying a new recipe, reading a book, having a thoughtful discussion, or learning a new language. I am personally very early in my journey with learning Korean, but I am really enjoying the experience.

I bring energy and enthusiasm to everything I do. I make an impact through my creative approach to teaching and my positive attitude. I think respect, empathy, and an open mind are core characteristics for an educator. I believe I actively embody all three.

Throughout my working life I have worked within large and small teams. Working together with colleagues is something I have always enjoyed. Solving challenges together and working towards a unified solution. I also enjoy working independently and focusing my energy on a specific activity or task.

Communication is key when teaching. Ensuring the children are able to understand and assimilate the subject matter. I believe I have strong communication skills which enable and promote active participation from children in the classroom, as well as open and positive discussion and activities.

Every child is unique. Children learn at different paces and in different ways. Being adaptable to the needs of the children is one of my core strengths. I have experience of providing multiple approaches whilst teaching, to ensure that all children are able to learn, reinforce and utilise the lesson content.

I am able to respond dynamically to the children’s learning and make adaptations and prioritisations accordingly. Whether this means slowing down and revisiting a subject from the beginning, having some one-to-one support time, providing extension activities to challenge their learning or utilising peer-to-peer activities.

I believe I have the right personality, skills and experience to work as an ESL teacher in South Korea. I am passionate about education and giving all children the right building blocks to grow into accomplished and well-rounded individuals.

I have a comprehensive background in Early Years education and many years’ experience in teaching early language acquisition and development for reading, writing and speaking.

I believe I embody all the right attributes for a teacher of ESL in South Korea. I am patient, inclusive, dependable, creative, motivated, organised and flexible. I put the children at the heart of their learning. I am resourceful and innovative in making learning interactive and engaging. I am passionate about helping every child progress, and I am resilient in the face of challenges.

It is my job as a teacher to bring out the best in each child. To provide them with a solid foundation in the English Language, which will help them to confidently embrace the opportunities which await them as they grow and develop through their learning journey and beyond.

I have Bachelor of Social Science Degree in Criminology and Legal Studies from the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa and I am currently studying towards my 168 hour TEFL Level 5 certification from the TEFL Academy. Working as Telesales Supervisor, one of my responsibilities as a supervisor includes training and coaching staff. This involves preparation of lessons, material and teaching employees as well preparing activities and refresher training in English. My current position is a teaching assistant at Randburg Clinic School. The learners that attend this school have learning disabilities such autism, various behavioral issues and dyslexia. It is my responsibility to aid in the learning process by teaching these children the mandatory skills such as reading, writing, numbers, colours etc as one would do as a foundation phase teacher.

I am hoping that you will allow me the opportunity to build on my skills and gain practical experience as an ESL teacher. I am highly energetic which came in handy when I would teacher my younger students aged 2 and a half and 3 years old. I feel as though I am a great listener and able to openly admit when I am not sure about certain topics which came in handy when I was teaching my pre-teens and teenagers aged 12 to 16 years old. I enjoy bringing out the best in people and giving them consistent reassurance and a thumbs up when I notice that they are trying and that also came in handy with my middle school aged students when it came to them doing oral presentations or debates. I am disciplined, hard-working and I am always up for a new challenge. I gained my teaching experience at an amazing training center called English First (EF), in Zhengzhou China. I worked there for two years and was offered a teaching job at an International school in the same city but when I had returned to South Africa to prepare my documents for the position, the pandemic halted my process.

Before working in China I was part of an NPO called R Shape that focused on providing free tutoring and mentorship to high school students from grades 10 to 12. And during my studies I was the class representative for 3 years and was the Academic officer in my department's school council in my last 2 years. I also served on the Advisory committee in my final year. These opportunities allowed me to be around students and gave me skills on how to listen to their problems and strategize with them on how to help or solve their academic issues and sometimes, personal issues. It also taught me how to think on my feet and be able to adapt when things don't go as planned.

My old job and the new job I managed to obtain a contract for eagerly are waiting for me to start but seeing that China is nowhere near allowing South Africans back in I am here searching for positions elsewhere.

I am a confident, outgoing and hardworking individual, who can adjust with ease to any working environment. I also work well within a team, valuing each member contribution in a respectful and friendly manner. I take direction well and carry out any task asked of me in an enthusiastic way. I am always eager to gain more working experience along with extra life skills in a new and challenging environment.

I also have prior experience in working within a school environment having volunteered at a local primary school whilst also completing my last year of university. While volunteering at the school, I was able to aide and assist the classroom teacher with the teaching of pupils from ages 5-12 years old. This volunteering provided me with invaluable first hand experience on the inner workings of a classroom, which i adapted to with ease and thrived within. This experience allowed me to gain key social and educational skills needed to positively interact with students and so improve and increase their learning capacities and abilities.

During my 3rd year of university, I completed a 6 month Erasmus Exchange programme in Budapest, Hungary. This exchange program was extremely rewarding, as for a sustained period of time I was able to interact with a variety of different people from various cultures from all over the world. This experience of living in a foreign country, extremely enhanced my personal skills and development. It allowed me to adapt and thrive in unfamiliar surroundings and gain invaluable life experiences which greatly increased my confidence and leadership skills within unfamiliar surroundings.

Finally, having gained a First Class Honors Bachelors degree in Social Sciences whilst also volunteering and continuing to work at a part time job throughout the duration of my studies, I believe shows the level of ability and educational knowledge I have to effectively carry out this employment opportunity which in turn will enhance the opportunities of the students within my care.

My name is Katrina Zai, a Native English speaker from Australia. My father is Australian, and my mother is from Hong Kong. I am mixed blood and grew up in a bilingual household. My father does not speak any Chinese, so I learned to be a verbal translator from English to Chinese, Chinese to English at a very young age.
Although I am Australian, I spent 17 years in the USA studying and working so my English is now more American than Australian, but I am aware of the differences in both written and spoken English. I love languages and have studied Korean previously in Seoul, although I am still a beginner, I know enough Korean for greetings and basic conversations. I am also fluent in Cantonese and conversational in Mandarin. I studied French throughout high school and university and I also took Dutch for over 1 year. I have a passion for languages as I see them as a doorway to experiencing new cultures and their traditions.
With my experience in living and working in different countries, I adapt easily and well. I had previously lived in Seoul briefly while attending at a Hagwon in Gangnam for Korean. I am quite familiar with the city and its surrounding areas. I am also familiar with Korean culture and traditions.
While attending Boston College, a 4 years University, for a bachelor’s degree of double majors in Marketing and Human Resource Management, I volunteered for 1 year as part of our school’s program to teach English reading to illiterate adults. The most difficult part of this was that most adults already knew some words, hence when they read, they tend to guess what the word is without reading it. I was patient and gentle as I guide them to sound out the word and subtly correcting them without discouraging them. I worked mainly one on one so that I can focus on each person’s needs and their level of comprehension.
I know that my career has been extensive in the F&B industry, but I have spent many years in leadership roles in different countries and lead multiple teams of staff, many whose English is also their 2nd language. Although unofficially I was not teaching them, but I mentored their language skills on a personal level.
Due to the pandemic, I decided to change careers and got my 120 hours TEFL Certification along with other relevant teaching English certificates to begin my new journey and goal as an English teacher. I obtained Teaching Kids English, Teaching English Online, Teaching English level 3, Speech Therapy & SEN Teaching and Intro to Child Psychology. I also obtained certifications for courses on First Aid & CPR and Microsoft PowerPoint.
