While I am relatively new to teaching, I have many years of leadership experience from high school, college, and post-college organizations I was involved in. I am an extremely fast learner, I am very efficient, and I have great time management abilities. Within my leadership experience, I have often had to engage in public speaking, which has helped me develop excellent people skills. I am familiar with Microsoft Office programs, such as Word and PowerPoint.

My name is Katrina Zai, a Native English speaker from Australia. My father is Australian, and my mother is from Hong Kong. I am mixed blood and grew up in a bilingual household. My father does not speak any Chinese, so I learned to be a verbal translator from English to Chinese, Chinese to English at a very young age.
Although I am Australian, I spent 17 years in the USA studying and working so my English is now more American than Australian, but I am aware of the differences in both written and spoken English. I love languages and have studied Korean previously in Seoul, although I am still a beginner, I know enough Korean for greetings and basic conversations. I am also fluent in Cantonese and conversational in Mandarin. I studied French throughout high school and university and I also took Dutch for over 1 year. I have a passion for languages as I see them as a doorway to experiencing new cultures and their traditions.
With my experience in living and working in different countries, I adapt easily and well. I had previously lived in Seoul briefly while attending at a Hagwon in Gangnam for Korean. I am quite familiar with the city and its surrounding areas. I am also familiar with Korean culture and traditions.
While attending Boston College, a 4 years University, for a bachelor’s degree of double majors in Marketing and Human Resource Management, I volunteered for 1 year as part of our school’s program to teach English reading to illiterate adults. The most difficult part of this was that most adults already knew some words, hence when they read, they tend to guess what the word is without reading it. I was patient and gentle as I guide them to sound out the word and subtly correcting them without discouraging them. I worked mainly one on one so that I can focus on each person’s needs and their level of comprehension.
I know that my career has been extensive in the F&B industry, but I have spent many years in leadership roles in different countries and lead multiple teams of staff, many whose English is also their 2nd language. Although unofficially I was not teaching them, but I mentored their language skills on a personal level.
Due to the pandemic, I decided to change careers and got my 120 hours TEFL Certification along with other relevant teaching English certificates to begin my new journey and goal as an English teacher. I obtained Teaching Kids English, Teaching English Online, Teaching English level 3, Speech Therapy & SEN Teaching and Intro to Child Psychology. I also obtained certifications for courses on First Aid & CPR and Microsoft PowerPoint.

I am a native English speaker from the UK, educated to degree level and have recently been awarded an English teaching certificate from an accredited institution. I have developed my teaching skills by providing music tuition to young people aged 9 – 16 for several years. Having qualified for my TEFL certificate at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have not yet had much opportunity to use my newly qualified skills. However, I feel that my university degree and my experience in informal learning settings has given me ideas on how I would approach teaching. I would emphasise confidence building and creating a positive learning environment for the students. This will allow them to explore the language they are learning without fear of reprimand or humiliation.

I am confident in my communication skills as throughout my life I have had a variety of experiences in which to practice. One key experience is that my sister has autism, which has meant that I have had to learn how to communicate with her as an individual. This can apply to language teaching, as a lot of what I say is very clear and precise as a result of communicating with her for many years. Another example of this is when I went to Zambia and helped run a children's camp. The children did not speak English, nor did I speak Bemba, but through enunciated words and clear non verbal communication we were able to successfully communicate together.

One of my biggest strengths is my ability to fit in with people from different cultures. I have travelled the world through working on a cruise ship. I am a flexible and hardworking person and also a quick learner. I am a trustworthy person, who just loves living life. In every job that I have worked I have always strived to give my absolute best and the people I have worked with would attest to that. As an Engineer and a former Team Leader, I found daily teaching opportunities at work and have developed the way I help colleagues to understand difficult concepts. It was often expected of me to help people understand the signal processing concepts in a way that suited them. These ‘teaching moments’ involved maths, equations, or problem solving.

After finding this aspect of my job so enjoyable, I began volunteering with young people aged 10-14 years as a Scout Leader in 2018. This role allowed me to teach young people life skills, social skills and just generally share information with them in a teaching or mentor capacity. For example, I developed a game to help the Scouts understand how world trading works between different economies, and co-ordinated the young people in a workshop where we played it. Further to this experience with young people, I helped to raise my youngest sister, who is twelve years my junior. I helped her with her studies and whatever skills she wanted to improve.

Generally, I am a cheerful, calm go-getter. I like gaining new experiences and enjoy chances to improve myself or my skills. Even if I make mistakes, I look at them as learning opportunities and creative ways to either work with or around problems. These parts of my personality have led me to take a sabbatical from Engineering in order to move abroad with my wife (Alice Bagnall, who has already applied), and take on ESL teaching in order to improve the way I communicate with others and share my native English with those who can benefit from it. I am currently working as an au pair in Italy mainly teaching a 10 and 12 year old English. Before Italy I was teaching English in a primary school in Hunan, China which I thoroughly enjoyed. Previous to moving to China, I studied Criminology at Teesside University, graduating with a 2:1. I have a lot of experience teaching students in both Korea and England which I believe is a strength that I have. I taught in Korea for nine months and was teaching students aged between 4-13 years. The lessons that I taught primarily consisted of phonics, grammar, writing, reading, maths, art, science, P.E. and other lessons as well. Every Monday and Friday, I taught extra phonics lessons once the kindergarten finished for an extra hour to those students who required the extra help.
In England, I worked as a teaching assistant in a Reception to Year 1 class (4-6 years old) and in a Year 2 (6-7 years old) for a year each. I was assigned various tasks by the teacher to help the students and the class when needed. I worked with small groups of children to help them with their mathematics and their writing skills as they struggled with both. I also worked one on one with students who needed help in different subjects. I also worked closely with those who had additional needs such as ADHD and autism.

I think that I have the ability to develop relationships with their students. As teachers we need to be able to build trusting relationships with students in order to create a safe, positive, and productive learning environment and being able to engage students in learning.

I feel like I have a patient, caring, and kind personality which is what is required to be a good, helpful teacher. As a teacher you need to understand the knowledge of the learners.
