Prior to this I was working with Oxford International, a company that provides language programmes for international students in the UK. Whilst working with them I was lucky enough to be given different job roles through the years. I started out as an Activity Leader, then became Onsite Activity Coordinator and ultimately was given the role of Programme Coordinator.
Finally, whilst studying at university and before that at high school I have always had private tutoring jobs.

In 2015 I started volunteering at New Season Foundation. This particular foundation is a non-profit organisation aimed at improving the lives of the youth in South Africa. My role at the foundation was to assist my students with their numeracy and literacy skills during an afterschool programme.

I tutored students between grades R to 5. Each day I would plan and present lessons based on the work they were being taught at school. The majority of my students struggled with the English language as they were mainly Afrikaans speaking. My lessons therefore largely revolved around teaching them to understand the language effectively.

I always tried to make my lessons relatable and interesting. At the end of each week I would create a challenge and divide the class into two teams, the winning team would win a prize and at the end of each month I would create a quiz and the student who scored the highest marks wins a prize. Apart from being a tutor, I also played a supportive role in the lives of my students as I ensured that I understood and catered to their individual learning needs.

Being a university student, a volunteer tutor, a paralegal, a legal secretary and a personal assistant proved me to be a fast learner, resilient, and able to adapt to any situation. I am great at interacting with people, I have a great attitude and I have the ability to work well in a team. I am an all-rounder and I'm great at multitasking. I am attentive, meticulous, creative and diligent.

I have worked with children for 4 years now through employment and volunteer experiences. I currently take on the role as an Early Childhood Educator and work with a range of age groups from Preschool to School Age at a child care centre. Responsibilities include working with staff to create an inclusive environment that caters to the needs of all children and engaging with children in curriculum.

I do not have experience teaching English however, I am currently in the process of completing my TEFL certification and very committed in learning and gaining skills. With this, I am able to work with children as well as adults. For my skills, I am an attentive listener. This means that I listen to understand rather than listening to respond. I am currently working on my masters degree in clinical mental health counseling, which I put on hold to live this dream.

Through work and university I have gained many skills which I can transfer over to this role.

First, after years of working within a call-centre environment and working within university groups of many different cultures, I have gained extensive communication skills in discussing ideas, taking on feedback and active listening. I have been able to apply these across different situations, from speaking with customers, lecturers, friends as well as being able to adapt and discuss with fellow students who do not speak english as their native language. Through this time, I have also been able to build up competent teamwork, by engaging with my colleagues on best practice situations and communicating with to resolve problems.

I currently work as an English as a Second Language instructor for Preply, an online tutoring site for people of all ages looking to improve their language skills. I have 4 students that I teach individually. I have created individualized curriculums for each student based on their goals and language abilities. My teaching career began at a young age as a pre-school dance teacher where I worked at many different studios as I completed high-school and college. After graduating college, I was employed as an art teacher at The Boys & Girls Club of America, an after school program designed to supplement education where the public school system cannot provide programs. While there, I learned classroom management skills and the importance of forming connections with your students.
In 2015, I moved to New York and became the Program Manager for a teen program at Rennert International, a language school that makes up part of Wall Street Languages. In this position, I worked with over 150 teenagers all from different countries. These students’ main goal in participating in the program was to improve their english and prepare for college. I assisted them in all aspects of this goal; living in the dorms with them, ensuring all school work was completed, and booking tickets to cultural events. I have years of experience working with children between the ages of 4-16 both within and outside of a classroom setting. One of the most recent of theses experiences was teaching English as a second language in Nairobi, Africa for three months to 5-6 year olds. I was the sole teacher of a class containing 38 students and was responsible for teaching english (as a send language), math, science, art, music and sports. It was also my responsibility to plan these lessons and create handouts/ worksheets for the children to use both in class and as homework.

Furthermore, I have other teaching experience within my church congregation where I teach a gospel centred lesson each week as well as within my university where I host weekly revision sessions for first year students (typically 18-19 years old).

I have a patient and nurturing personally. I'm confident and outgoing but am warm and easy to get along with.

My husband will be moving to South Korea at the end of September with the Military to be stationed in the Osan airforce base for 1 year so ideally I would love to be a placed on a school close to him.

Certain skills, strategies and personality traits contribute to the makings of a successful teacher, but it is important that teachers care about their students. Some skills and strategies that I will bring to the classroom include patience, creativity, the ability to get down on a child's level, a willingness to not only impart knowledge, but to learn from my students, and the ability to adapt to change. Accommodating various learning styles is key. Overall, and where applicable and appropriate, I love for my lessons to be fun, creative and unorthodox.

I was fortunate enough to work mostly with children during the completion of my practicum hours during my Psychology degree. I had the opportunity to develop and implement psycho-educational exercises with children of various ages and backgrounds. I have also worked as a tutor, both privately and at my university. I had a volunteer experience that allowed me to work with young children that did not speak English very well. I had to implement educational exercises with the help of a co-teacher. I then worked as an au pair in the US, where I looked after two children who experience learning difficulties. Most recently, I worked as an English language instructor in both China and South Korea, teaching students aged 5-15 years old.
