To Whom It May Concern:

Please accept my candidacy for the English Language Teaching position with your school in South Korea. My years of experience in education and youth development demonstrate my devotion to improving the future of learners in my classroom. During my time teaching Korean students in the United States, I was delighted to learn of how dedicated and eager they are to learn English. I would be honored to teach in South Korea.

While completing my Certification of English Language Teaching (CELTA) with the University of Cambridge (Teaching House New York), I taught pre-intermediate and upper-intermediate English learners using a variety of techniques. I used different course books to teach integrated receptive and productive skills lessons. I clarified various language points, including grammar, vocabulary, phonology and functions. I excelled at lesson planning and building a great rapport within the classroom. I am confident that the skills and techniques attained through my CELTA certification will make me the ideal English Language Teacher.

Prior to my CELTA completion, I obtained my Masters of Public Administration at Baruch College, I conducted my capstone research on how mentorship can have high impact on the personal and academic achievement of young women in Brooklyn, New York. In my last position as Coordinator of Internships and Professional Development at New York City College of Technology, I was able to develop and facilitate in-classroom professional development workshops to over 400 students each semester. My students have shared sentiments echoed by many: “As City Tech students, it is important that there are people like Ms. Nicole Dillon of the Professional Development Center who work to help us recognize our potential.”

I am confident in my ability to succeed as an English Language Teacher in South Korea. I consider myself an innovate team player and educator.I look forward to discussing my qualifications with you.

Prisca: Canada: University of Toronto: Sep 01, 2018

My name is Prisca Choi and I am a creative, enthusiastic and passionate teacher currently teaching in Jeollabuk-do, South Korea. I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master’s in Arts, specializing in Japanese and Korean colonial history. I am also well versed in world history, visual arts, music and classical Latin. I am interested in teaching at an international institution to expand my current teaching experience. Since arriving in Korea, I have had the opportunity to work with middle school students in rural areas. I am now looking to teaching younger students in a city location so I can interact with a wider range of students from varying social backgrounds.

In South Korea, I mainly teach middle school grades at Namwon Middle School and Unbong Middle School. Once a week at Dotong Elementary School, I teach the fifth grade. In the winter season, I taught sixth grade at Gyorong Elementary School. This year I have had the opportunity to run an advanced English club with third grade students at Namwon Middle School. My classes incorporate newspaper articles and multicultural topics that allow students to apply their critical thinking and English skills to real life topics. I have some previous experience in Canada teaching classical Latin at a university level and I worked as a private tutor with adult students specifically on English pronunciation and fluency. I think my personal language learning experience helps relate to students' English frustrations. Furthermore, my exchange abroad and other travel experiences will help me be more empathetic to cultural differences.

A summary of my professional achievements, education and other proficient languages will be found on my resume as well as details regarding my own freelance photography and media work. Thank you for taking time to consider my application and please do not hesitate to call, email or Skype me if you have any further questions.

Tyler: United States: University of California, Los Angeles: Oct 15, 2018

Academically, I have excelled over the years, and I believe I have the right skills to help students currently navigating through the intricate web of the college process. As a high school senior, I scored a near perfect score on the ACT, earning a 35. In my undergraduate studies at UCLA, I have managed to earn my four year degree in only three years while keeping a high GPA that earned me Magna Cum Laude Honors, as well as taking advanced classes that earned me UCLA College Honors.
Through UCLA, I have experience living in Korea. I was awarded as a Korea University Undergraduate Fellow. Last summer UCLA funded my studies, and I lived in Anam, Seoul, and attended Korea University. I adapted to the culture quite easily and am eager to return to practice my Korean language skills and to reconnect with many of my Korean friends.
I believe I would excel in this type of position because not only do I have the academic merit to teach these at times advanced courses, but because I also have work experience that has fostered my interpersonal relations. Working as both a Spanish tutor and a Customer Service Representative as Whole Foods Market has prepared me to deal with people in a calm and mature manner. My familiarity with the college process with help ease the nerves of students caught up in dealing with competitive American Universities. Just as these students are preparing to take the next step in their academic careers, after this next year I plan on taking mine and continuing on the Graduate School. I plan to take the GRE in October before my period of availability and will also be able to offer insight on this process.

David: United Kingdom: Aug 01, 2018

A native speaker with a passion for English, I also have very neutral Received Pronunciation. Currently working as an English teacher in Santiago de Chile, I have experience working with Adults through both set course materials and IELTS and TOEFL exam preparation, and so am comfortable adjusting to meet the needs of the students. I feel that being able to adapt to the student, both in terms of methods and behaviour are the key to a successful learning environment.
I find new cultural experiences be an exciting prospect, and thoroughly enjoy seeing how people from around the world approach problems, entertainment, learning and all other aspects of life. Learning about a new culture is the only way to thrive in it, and one of the greatest advantages of the teaching career is it allows one to learn about the lives of others through our everyday experiences. Furthermore, being able to help people reach their potential is one of the most rewarding experiences in life, and one that teaching fulfils in abundance.
I studied music for my degree, and it was there I discovered teaching, but I also got to experience what it felt like to be learning from a teacher, far more advanced than myself. Having this experience allows me to empathise with the difficulties a learner faces in the classroom, and I feel this creates a constructive and collaborative attitude between the teacher and students. Everyday I try to learn something new from my students, which not only helps me to grow as a person, but allows the student to express ideas and things that are important to them.

Shayna: United States: Jul 16, 2018

I am an experienced, qualified, and cheerful teacher who is enthusiastic about the English language and making learning a fun and positive experience that students look forward to.
I am certified in TEFL (a 120 hour online course) as well as registered to complete a CELTA certification by the end of June, 2018. I have worked as an English teacher and tutor in Japan, Korea and America and am very experienced at adapting to life in a culture different from my own.
I am currently a student at the University of Hawaii, graduating May 12th, 2018. I work for the University with their international students teaching English conversation part time.
Many students specifically request me as a teacher and my English classes often grow quickly and are extremely popular for the schools/programs I have taught for. This is because I have seriously studied a foreign language myself and I understand exactly how hard it can be. Because of this, I create a warm, welcoming and encouraging atmosphere where students can gain confidence, have fun and feel positive about English learning.

Helen: United States: University of Virginia: Jun 25, 2018

My professional endeavors have enhanced my creative problem-solving and interpersonal skills. As a VISAS language consultant, I helped international students improve their conversational English language skills. To work through miscommunications and misunderstandings, I worked together with my students to develop creative communication skills, thus enhancing my social communication skills, as well as my collaborative skills. Additionally, for many of my internships, I was often tasked with research assignments. When the answers to my questions were not easily found, I took the initiative to cold-call companies and interview people directly. This highlights my self-motivation, as well as my determination to excel at the task at hand. I believe that my determination and my creativity will be an asset to GLOII and advantageous creating a positive and effective learning environment.

My academic interests will also be beneficial in this role. I have taken a diverse set of classes, ranging from Comparative Politics to World War II History, as well as several psychology courses. I believe I am well equipped and well experienced to teach these broad academic subjects effectively and clearly. Not only am I well-versed in these subjects, I am also highly interested in these topics, which will make teaching both easier and better, for myself and for the students. Furthermore, as an intern for Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation, a bureau in the United States Department of the Interior, I was immersed in not only the current state the U.S politics and the U.S government but also the history of the government. I believe this experience will be beneficial when teaching students topics regarding the United States government, as well as United States history.

Lastly, I have tutoring experience in reading, writing, and math. Though they were for a younger group of students, I believe I can take the skills and experiences gained from tutoring elementary students and use them to become a better and more effective teacher to older students.
Lastly, I have experience tutoring young elementary students in reading, writing, and math. Though students taking AP and SAT preparation classes would be older, I believe I can take the skills and experiences gains from teaching younger students and use them to become an effective teacher for older students as well.

Thomas: United Kingdom: Aug 01, 2018

I have experience in a number of relevant positions, including teaching in primary schools. My most significant experience in relation to this application was at 'Manor Courses', an international English language school. There, I learned many skills in communication, interacting with patience and boundaries with students, as well as how to engage them in learning. I have numerous voluntary experiences, such as at the 'Samaritans' and as a mental health advocate, which have helped me to be a good communicator.

I am a passionate and enthusiastic individual, conveying an enthusiasm for ideas that I have to others. This energy means that I have a strong work ethic, and care deeply about what I do.

Andrew: United Kingdom: Sep 01, 1994

Upon completion of my bachelor’s degree in Geography, I had hoped to study a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Unfortunately, however, before I could begin the PGCE I underwent surgery leading me to take a year out. Whilst recovering from my operation I wanted to further my education and learning, and explored avenues in which I could do this. A close friend shared with me his positive experience completing the TEFL and teaching English, and so, upon further research I was enthralled by the course and the different modules available.

This course completely captivated me and furthered my motivation to become a teacher, albeit, now my main motivation is to teach English as a foreign language in South Korea. I would love the opportunity to teach EFL, as I truly believe my personality, traits and skillset as a person and a professional are inherently aligned with those of an outstanding EFL teacher.

Foremost, I have always been thoroughly interested in Asian culture. Developed through summers spent in Hong Kong, which is discussed in more detail below. South Korea appealed to me, as I have never been to the country before, thus, I am excited about the potential prospects and new challenges that come with a different lifestyle. The geography of South Korea also appealed to me, having many metropolitan cities as well as high relief throughout the country meaning ample opportunities for hikes and walks.

I believe the classroom is a living community and that everyone, from the principal, to the students, to the parents, must contribute in order to maintain a positive atmosphere. Everyone in the classroom contributes as a student, teacher, and a thinker. I learn from students as much as they learn from me. All students are individual and everyone learns in their own unique way.

Over the past number of years through tertiary education, I have developed excellent communication. For example, I have bolstered my ICT skills that will help to help explain material in the curriculum, in a variety of ways, to cater for the diverse learning needs of students. For example, when planning lessons I will make a conscious effort to ensure I am not just catering for visual learners like myself, but try to see lessons through other learners’ eyes. Therefore, I will implement and incorporate material to allow all learners within the classroom environment an equal opportunity when it comes to learning and absorbing knowledge.

I will implement self and peer assessment in everyday lessons, providing clear criteria and objectives for students to assess against, encouraging them to take more responsibility for their own learning. I believe providing continual feedback is of utmost importance as students attempt to meet their learning targets.

Jinnie: United States: University of Chicago: Jul 02, 2018

As stated above, I have a great deal of tutoring experience, having worked with students of a variety of ages on a fairly diverse array of subjects. I think I am particularly well qualified to teach AP and SAT subjects, as I graduated high school as a National AP Scholar, National Merit Scholar, and Valedictorian of my 790-person class. In addition, however, I believe that my non-teaching experience has given me a wealth of transferable skills that make me an even better fit for this job.

As Campus Coordinator for Adam Block Design, a custom apparel company geared towards college students in Greek life, I have not only learned how to hold a customer’s interest and make sales; I have learned how to speak to a client in order to win and maintain their trust, how to build relationships, and how to communicate effectively both in person and over email. I have learned how to explain complicated processes, how to balance tenacity and flexibility, and how to deal with an angry customer. I often navigate several different orders at a time, and a fast response time is crucial in such a competitive business, so I have learned how to succeed within a demanding structure. I also work as a Digitization Assistant in UChicago’s very notable Special Collections Research Center, where I have refined a strict attention to detail and organization. I have become very talented at multitasking, balancing both of these jobs on top of the rigor of a UChicago education and participation in various campus activities. I am a very active member of Pi Beta Phi, for instance having been Show Planning Chair for Arrowfest, our annual philanthropy event by which we raise around $20,000 a year for literacy nonprofits, two years in a row. I am also a member of the University Disciplinary Committee, which has been a very important resource for experience in conflict management, informational analysis, and communication.

I consider myself to be a responsible, dedicated, and efficient person. I am also fluent in Korean, though I always welcome the opportunity to improve, and by way of my summer internship at NCSOFT, am familiar with Korean working culture. I am generally good with technology, have coding experience (acquired by taking four rigorous classes in the Computer Science department at UChicago), and above all, am a fast and eager learner.

Thank you for your consideration.
