Greetings, my name is Raelene Govender. I reside in sunny South Africa and I am a teacher by profession. I have taught in both local and esl classrooms before and have 2 years of teaching experience. I have local and international experience, having taught in South Africa and China, teaching students between the ages of 3-18years. I have acquired various skills that would be helpful additions in any classroom setting. I am able to lesson plan and create stimulating and interesting content for my lessons. I am able to effectively work in a team and pride myself on honesty and transparency. I am also able to operate any technical apparatus efficiently including but not limited to (whiteboards, smart boards, interactive boards, computer system). Currently studying the 168-hour Level 5 Online TEFL Course – likely to be completed within 1-2 weeks.

Since graduating from university in 2012 I have had experience in education in varying capacities. Initially I spent time in a secondary school tutoring individuals and classes as well as focusing on children with behavioural issues and children from minority backgrounds. I found it to be an interesting and insightful experience, giving me a much better understanding of the social and cultural issues involved with teaching.
In 2016 I began to Tutor at a local Primary school (ages 5-11). The majority of my time was spent with the older classes however I had some experience teaching classes of every age group. As well as teaching in classes, I also took groups of students out of the class to do some catch up work, mainly mathematics as well as some reading and writing practice.

I feel that my experiences since finishing university have helped me develop as a person and will in turn improve my ability to teach. I currently work as a manager in a factory and as such I am responsible for a large number of people. While most of that responsibility is work related, I also owe a duty of care to people in a personal aspect, helping them with their health and well-being. I am responsible for the training and performance of my staff and the environment in which they work. Since working in this role I have taken Polish language courses, in order to better communicate with and understand a majority of the staff that I work with. It has helped me develop better connections with people and has helped me realise some of the difficulties that other people can face on a daily basis. I have also helped a number of people from my work place to develop their English language skills, offering free tuition to anyone that seeks it, as well as giving free maths tuition to a number of my staff's children.

I am a friendly and enthusiastic person who approaches work in the same way. Working in a high-pressured environment has honed my skills in problem-solving and achieving targets while maintaining a positive moral amongst my team. My managerial style is strongly people-driven, believing that to get the best out of people you need to understand their needs and actions.

The rewards and benefits of helping people to further themselves is what draws me to teaching, the opportunity to help children and make a real impact on their future is what motivates me to pursue this as a career.

In my experience teaching in South Korea over the years, it seems that most students are not encouraged to speak their opinion due to the nature of the collectivist culture. However, with globalization, this is slowly changing through academia with foreigner interactions. At my current school among the different types of English classes: reading, writing, conversation, etc., debate classes are at the core of our conversation classes. In the debate classes, we instruct our students to not only communicate strategically, but we also train them to express meaning orally in interpersonal, transactional, formal and informal ways in form of recount, narrative, procedural, descriptive, analytical exposition, spoof, didactic explanation, and review in daily life. I believe that having more conversations through debate classes can help remove such cultural restrictions and make our upcoming scholars to become more adaptable to exercise their freedom of expression in a thought-provoking and engaging class which is a necessity in our changing world.

The coronavirus pandemic took all the teaching methods I had employed for nearly a decade and made me quickly adapt to online teaching—something I had never done before. At my current position at Sahmyook, the first job where I had to work with 11+ other foreigners, I learned the importance of teamwork and accepting criticisms in areas I could improve as a teacher. For example, though I work well with my students, I did not know how to organize or keep track of students’ concurrent progress online, which was a necessity through Zoom since teachers could no longer meet and teach students physically in the class. A co-worker introduced to me Class Dojo, a school communication platform that helped me organize students’ achievements, scores, and other related material readily available for parents/students to view. So, you will get an adaptable and now organized teacher that is great with communicating with a team of teachers and faculty amicably. Also, you will get an experienced teacher that knows how to teach students online through Zoom simultaneously along with physical students in class giving equal opportunity for all to participate. I think this is the first time in history classes were taught both online and offline at the same time and I'm glad to be apart of this challenging teaching era. I have grown in many ways because of this unique teaching experience.
This is a tangent to my strengths, but I believe it is important to have teachers that can relate to their students because oftentimes students have a hard time relating to teachers from different nations. I have been in South Korea for over a decade now, and as an educator, I am expected to do more than just share ideas, language skills, and their applications here and abroad. I have examined the challenges that Korean students face because I have worked in many of the institutions that they attend. Since I have witnessed their stress during testing and entrance exams, I am very understanding of their sensitive nature. I am also mindful of Korean etiquette and have a working knowledge and great command of the Korean language.

I have done a gap year, where I solely focused on improving myself and discovering what I am passionate about and it has been clear that I have a huge interest in helping others to reach their full potential and to walk the journey through with them. Some of the courses I have completed during this time includes a critical thinking course, positive thinking course, time and stress management course and a health and nutrition course. I am sure that I can incorporate the skills I learnt into my teaching career.

I would consider myself to be a positive and uplifting person with a very talkative and loving personality. I have a very high work ethic standard that I hold myself to, so I take pride in completing my tasks before deadlines and to the best of my ability. I take full responsibility for my mistakes and I always look to improve in any area that I fall short in.

I am and have been in a multicultural school, church and university so I am familiar with other cultures and I love to learn from them and to find a common ground where we can interact with one another and reach common goals that we have set. I am excited to emerge myself in the rich culture of Korea and will most certainly participate in activities within my area.
