I also have prior experience in working within a school environment having volunteered at a local primary school whilst also completing my last year of university. While volunteering at the school, I was able to aide and assist the classroom teacher with the teaching of pupils from ages 5-12 years old. This volunteering provided me with invaluable first hand experience on the inner workings of a classroom, which i adapted to with ease and thrived within. This experience allowed me to gain key social and educational skills needed to positively interact with students and so improve and increase their learning capacities and abilities.

During my 3rd year of university, I completed a 6 month Erasmus Exchange programme in Budapest, Hungary. This exchange program was extremely rewarding, as for a sustained period of time I was able to interact with a variety of different people from various cultures from all over the world. This experience of living in a foreign country, extremely enhanced my personal skills and development. It allowed me to adapt and thrive in unfamiliar surroundings and gain invaluable life experiences which greatly increased my confidence and leadership skills within unfamiliar surroundings.

Finally, having gained a First Class Honors Bachelors degree in Social Sciences whilst also volunteering and continuing to work at a part time job throughout the duration of my studies, I believe shows the level of ability and educational knowledge I have to effectively carry out this employment opportunity which in turn will enhance the opportunities of the students within my care.

While I am relatively new to teaching, I have many years of leadership experience from high school, college, and post-college organizations I was involved in. My name is Katrina Zai, a Native English speaker from Australia. My father is Australian, and my mother is from Hong Kong. I am mixed blood and grew up in a bilingual household. My father does not speak any Chinese, so I learned to be a verbal translator from English to Chinese, Chinese to English at a very young age.
Although I am Australian, I spent 17 years in the USA studying and working so my English is now more American than Australian, but I am aware of the differences in both written and spoken English. I love languages and have studied Korean previously in Seoul, although I am still a beginner, I know enough Korean for greetings and basic conversations. I am also fluent in Cantonese and conversational in Mandarin. I studied French throughout high school and university and I also took Dutch for over 1 year. I have a passion for languages as I see them as a doorway to experiencing new cultures and their traditions.
With my experience in living and working in different countries, I adapt easily and well. I had previously lived in Seoul briefly while attending at a Hagwon in Gangnam for Korean. I am quite familiar with the city and its surrounding areas. I am also familiar with Korean culture and traditions.
While attending Boston College, a 4 years University, for a bachelor’s degree of double majors in Marketing and Human Resource Management, I volunteered for 1 year as part of our school’s program to teach English reading to illiterate adults. The most difficult part of this was that most adults already knew some words, hence when they read, they tend to guess what the word is without reading it. I was patient and gentle as I guide them to sound out the word and subtly correcting them without discouraging them. I worked mainly one on one so that I can focus on each person’s needs and their level of comprehension.
I know that my career has been extensive in the F&B industry, but I have spent many years in leadership roles in different countries and lead multiple teams of staff, many whose English is also their 2nd language. Although unofficially I was not teaching them, but I mentored their language skills on a personal level.
Due to the pandemic, I decided to change careers and got my 120 hours TEFL Certification along with other relevant teaching English certificates to begin my new journey and goal as an English teacher. I obtained Teaching Kids English, Teaching English Online, Teaching English level 3, Speech Therapy & SEN Teaching and Intro to Child Psychology. I also obtained certifications for courses on First Aid & CPR and Microsoft PowerPoint.

I am a native English speaker from the UK, educated to degree level and have recently been awarded an English teaching certificate from an accredited institution. I have developed my teaching skills by providing music tuition to young people aged 9 – 16 for several years. This role taught me important skills such as lesson planning, classroom management and progress monitoring. I am currently working as a private English tutor in the U.S. where I work with one six year old student and one four year old student on English language and reading skills. During my short time in this role both students saw remarkable improvements to their reading skills. My six year old student, who was unable to read at the start of our tutoring sessions, is now reading 20 words per minute despite having dyslexia. I am also working as a private nanny to a one year old child. Each day we work on his acquisition of motor and language skills both of which have drastically improved during my time in this position. While at university, I was also able to work as an Assistant to the Instructor for the Department of Sociology at Washington University in St. Louis. In this role I assisted the instructor in developing lesson plans, assignments and examinations. I was also responsible for evaluating student work, managing the course website, proctoring examinations and providing individual instruction for students who were in need. Through these experiences I was able to develop the organizational, communication and interpersonal skills that will make me an excellent educator in your school. Having qualified for my TEFL certificate at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have not yet had much opportunity to use my newly qualified skills. However, I feel that my university degree and my experience in informal learning settings has given me ideas on how I would approach teaching. I would emphasise confidence building and creating a positive learning environment for the students. This will allow them to explore the language they are learning without fear of reprimand or humiliation.

I am confident in my communication skills as throughout my life I have had a variety of experiences in which to practice. One key experience is that my sister has autism, which has meant that I have had to learn how to communicate with her as an individual. This can apply to language teaching, as a lot of what I say is very clear and precise as a result of communicating with her for many years. Another example of this is when I went to Zambia and helped run a children's camp. The children did not speak English, nor did I speak Bemba, but through enunciated words and clear non verbal communication we were able to successfully communicate together.

One of my biggest strengths is my ability to fit in with people from different cultures. I have travelled the world through working on a cruise ship. I am a flexible and hardworking person and also a quick learner. I am a trustworthy person, who just loves living life. In every job that I have worked I have always strived to give my absolute best and the people I have worked with would attest to that. I am a person that people want to be around and I work hard for the overall goal of the team or the company I work for.
