I am a Korean American who has been a apart of a teaching life since the start of my life. My father is a tutor for the SAT and ran a hagwon when in the US. I have been surrounded by the learning environment outside of just my schooling. I have gone to Seoul multiple times and am quite comfortable and knowledgeable about how to operate in this city. I do not get thrown off by culture shock because of this and growing up in a Korean family.

I am a calm and patient individual who is open minded. I am open to criticism and do not shy away from confronting my weaknesses. I try my best and always want to help others and try to do my best to help others when they ask.

I am a well organized person who has to have things be put in there place. I keep things clean and organized. I would love this opportunity to be able to help those growing to better themselves and be able to help the younger generation.

I am a 24 year old recent graduate from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science/Biology and a minor in Chemistry.

For over 10 years, I have wanted to come to Korea so that I could understand a new culture and learn a new lan-guage. There is something about the Korean language that makes me want to listen to it all day. Yet, I never pursued my need in going to Korea. In parallel to this, I realized that I had the most rewarding feeling when I was able to help someone understand something that made no sense before. Yet, I never pursued tutoring or teaching. A while ago I went to a Toastmaster’s competition, and I heard this quote that made me look at things in a different perspective. The speaker quoted, “It’s never too late to be what you might have been”. I would love to be what I have might have been now. I would like to explore new cultures and languages now. I would like to explore my interest in teaching and helping people understand new things now. I believe that teaching English in Korea is the perfect opportunity for me to do things that I might have done. I am excited help students understand English and immerse myself in the Korean culture.

Throughout my education, I have always needed more time in understanding and grasping new concepts. I usually maintained A’s and B’s. But these grades included hours and hours of outside studying. What I began to appreciate was teachers or professors that broke things down into their fundamental pieces. When I was able to logically understand a piece of information, I could more easily apply this to solving other problems. My philosophy of teaching is revolved around students understanding the core concepts well, so that they can apply this to complex things. I am a visual learner, and so when I teach, I would like my students to see what I am doing. This would mean that not only would I say English concepts; I would like to write them out as well. It gives a student the time to stare at these new concepts and ponder, so that they can come up with more questions they may have for me. I feel lucky that understanding new things can be a bit slower for me than it can be for other people, because it gives me the opportunity to understand how to teach someone with patience. If explaining one example does not work, I want to have 5 other examples on my belt that I could use when trying to help a student understand. Ultimately, I want to teach how I would want to be taught. This means I want to teach students through auditory, kinesthetic, and visual styles. I will ensure that they can understand the fundamentals, so they can apply them to complex problems. I also want my students to be comfortable in asking me as many questions as they want.

I do realize that I do not have any teaching experience. The little experience I have is helping friends and classmates with problems that I have been able to master. I am planning on enrolling in the 170 hr TEFL course which includes a 20 hour practicum where I can observe/practice teaching. I feel that I am good at explaining things in different ways that tailors to different types of people. I go by the saying that “I will do the best I can with the tools I have”. I can ensure you, that I will do the best I can with the tools I have in teaching English to Korean students and understanding the their culture if given the opportunity to do so.

In short, I have spent the last two years teaching in some capacity. I spent a total of 12 months in central Vietnam and Shanghai as an ESL teacher, so have a thorough understanding of what both living in South-East / East Asia and working full-time as a foreign language teacher encompasses.

I am highly energetic, enthusiastic and generally focused on making English engaging and fun. For this reason I can work with any age group and have been quite successful as a kindergarten teacher, as evidenced by my previous experience.

It is also due to my analytical background (I have a 1st class Chemistry degree) that I also enjoy teaching higher level learners complex topics and grammar rules and am currently successfully privately tutoring students aged 16-18 chemistry in the UK.

It is my end goal to become a chemistry teacher in England and as such have visited schools to gain experience and to see if I enjoyed teaching. Since then I have completed a 140 hours TEFL course so that I can travel, adapt and enjoy new cultures.

I am very open and dedicated person who will put the effort in to ensure a professional level of performance which I will hope will provide the students with a fun, creative and most importantly effective lesson.

My desire to support children learning and growing combined with my skills in training and communication make me an ideal candidate for this role. I have experience in training in varying industries and now I am seeking this opportunity to make a career change. Working in a school and immersing into new cultures is something that I have always wanted to do and I seek experience in this field having recently completed my TEFL qualification. My tolerance, leadership ability and positive attitude are just some of the transferable skills that I have from my wide range of experience which would help me to fulfil this role. I have worked with children from a young age; as a lunchtime and after school supervisor whilst studying for my A-Levels and as a counsellor for Camp America, supporting children aged between 14 and 17 during the summer holidays. On a personal level, I spend time with my niece and nephew at the weekends, finding creative ways to help them learn new things about the world.

Camp America was a fantastic experience for me and this solidified my passion for working with children. I was responsible for the wellbeing of the children, ensuring their safety at camp and whilst on trips to Florida and Costa Rica. I independently ran activities of my own creation such as creative writing and cooking as well as organising a weekly ‘Open Mic Night’. Working at camp demonstrated I can adapt to cultural and social differences whilst working in another country and shows my ability to cope with the psychological and physical demands of caring for children, acting as a supportive and inspiring role model. Whilst working as a manager at McDonalds I was also able to refine and hone my organisational skills and demonstrate my ability to lead a team of staff, whilst supporting the larger team. I was particularly confident in diffusing difficult situations; a skill which is transferrable to dealing with behaviour and discipline in the school environment.

Through my qualifications, experience and wider interest in behaviour, I have developed a niche interest in child social and psychological development and how a child’s life can be impacted, negatively or positively by their environment. Due to this, I take the responsibility of supporting and assisting children in their learning, very seriously. I too, have been influenced by role models around me, my brother, Sean Mulhern, inspired me as he worked at the International School of Moscow for three years, originally as a Teaching Assistant before changing roles to become an Exams Officer. I believe it is important to allow children a positive place to achieve their capabilities and feel I would be an excellent addition to the team of support staff at your school.

I am driven and diligent, with excellent customer service skills and the interpersonal skills I have honed are incredibly useful in building relationships with customers, staff and all levels of management and most recently I have used these skills whilst networking. As a law student I have developed excellent written and verbal skills, culminating in my final year in my dissertation which I was awarded a first-class grade for, and was chosen to present at an academic conference.

I am a quick learner and have experience from previous roles I know I can adapt to use. I feel I would be an excellent candidate for this job, and my ambition is second only to my hard-working nature.

Volunteering in a summer camp in Thailand, to volunteering in an inner city school in Glasgow, it is clear my experiences vary with each developing and providing new skills.

Throughout school, I always enjoyed working with younger children and volunteered when living in Saudi Arabia. This exposed me to the different types of children and backgrounds and it allowed me to acknowledge these differences in a way to work with each child individually.

In returning to the United Kingdom for sixth form college, I became a sports leader. This involved organising sporting events for the local primary schools. This improved my organisation and team work. It also taught me to be flexible as certain things did not always go to plan. I was also a Netball coach for a small Primary School. This was one of the most rewarding roles I had in school as I was able to see the skills and love for sport evolve within these children. I was also a student mentor at school, helping younger students who were less able with English, Maths and Science. This was challenging as it was difficult to maintain their interest but by being approachable, enthusiastic and understanding, it made it easier.

At University, I was also a student mentor. I also volunteered at a school in inner city Glasgow which was also very rewarding. Last summer, I volunteered at a summer camp in Thailand for a week and at a school in Chiang Mai teaching English. This taught me to be flexible as there were many times when we had planned for different age groups or for different abilities and due to a lack of communication we were misinformed.

This summer coming, I am going to Italy to teach English in a summer camp. I am then going to Greece to also teach in a summer camp.
