I have 3 years of teaching and working experience for a Korean academy (hagwon) in South Korea. In addition, I obtained the 100-hours TEFL certificate and have gained first hand experience and knowledge of what is like to teach ESL students.

Previously, I have worked in Canada where I taught students of all abilities and ages (from kindergarten to middle school). My last job was working as an after school supervisor for Sidney Ledson Institute, a well known and reputable school in Canada. I am now teaching elementary and middle school students in Iksan, South Korea.

One of my strong points is that I am a passionate and enthusiastic English teacher and I like to make learning fun! My aim is to improve students' confidence in speaking English, and I can help students from all ages improve their reading and writing skills as well. I'm willing to teach young learners and adults from a beginner to upper intermediate level.

In terms of my personality, I am very friendly and also very optimistic in where I will take any challenge that comes my way.

I have experience both in private tutoring high school students in Chemistry and English, and serving as a student teacher in the classroom, teaching Math, English, and Science to a first-grade class. In February, I taught English as a Second Language at International House in Bogota, Colombia and earned the CELTA certificate. I believe I am the ideal candidate for this position because I have a passion for teaching and learning, and I possess a positive, compassionate, fun spirit. My experience includes in-class (9-13 learners) and one-on-one lessons with adults (ages 22-50). There was a wide range of student levels, and I planned lessons with a variety of focuses and methods. In addition to adapted coursebook materials, I created authentic texts to target students’ needs. For example, my pre-intermediate group practiced their writing skills through adapting a cover letter using various exponents within a marker sentence, while my upper-intermediate group discovered informal vs. formal language through role-playing while searching for a suitable Air B n B.

In December, I taught children (10-14 learners, ages 0-3) English as a Second Language in St. Maarten, N.A. at Just Kid Inn, a multicultural, Montessori-inspired school. One of the most effective ways that I assist students is by developing and presenting comprehensive and stimulating lesson plans that facilitate learning styles and levels. My goal is to foster and maintain an honest, communicative, and supportive learning environment, where each student feels safe, secure, special, and appropriately challenged. I am sensitive to students’ unique needs, and I offer positive encouragement and reinforcement to keep students focused and motivated.

I view teaching as a valuable service, and my management experience through running my own mobile massage business, being a certified yoga teacher, and health/life coach has helped me develop vital teaching skills. Conducting personal consultation sessions with my clients has strengthened my leadership abilities while working with people from various ages, economic backgrounds, and cultures have helped me to communicate with all sorts of women, men, and children. My name is Sophia Kim. I am a current 4th year student at Ringling College of Art and Design studying to graduate in May with a degree in Illustration and minor in Visual Development. As a Korean American in the United States, I was put into ESL classes through my elementary years as I had initially struggled with the English language. I love seeing my students progress with their listening, speaking, reading and writing and I always plan activities to utilise these skills. I am now currently an online teacher and have 1 year expirience as a kindergardern teacher. I LOVE children and enjoy my job very much. I am a bubbly friendly teacher so I make the classes fun for my students while getting the job done. Because thier attention span is low I try to make classes fun so that it doesn't really feel like they are on a class but rather a fun learning environment. I currently hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from St. John's University and I am in the process of completing a Master of Arts degree in Teaching Social Studies at New York University. Upon completion of my master's degree, I will be certified to teach social studies, history, and humanities in grades 5-12. I am interested in teaching at an international school because I believe I possess both the required pedagogical skills and content knowledge required to effectively contribute at such a school. In addition, I would love to expand my horizons by immersing myself in a foreign culture and continue to mature as an educator. Growing up in New York City, I experienced three distinct types of diverse school communities as a student: a standard public elementary school, a screened middle school, and a private high school. As a master's student at New York University, I have continued to learn about pedagogical methods and have put them into practice as a student teacher. As such, I believe I can bring a wide range of skills and ideas to any international school community, while also being open-minded myself and eager to learn.

As an emerging social studies teacher, I have a passion for teaching history, providing an engaging classroom experience, and helping my students grow and develop their skills, both academically and practically. Social studies have been a lifelong passion of mine; from the earliest age I can remember it was my favorite subject in school. That passion has continued into my adult life. As an undergraduate, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in History and I am currently completing a Master of Arts degree in Teaching Social Studies. I plan to continue to learn more about social studies and pedagogy, both formally and informally. In doing so, not only can I continue to hone my craft as an educator, but I can set an example for my students by exhibiting the type of lifelong learning that I want them to also attain.

During my first period of student teaching I experienced how rewarding it is to see students engaged in the learning process and develop their skills over the course of a semester. Naturally, the more students are engaged, the more they are going to develop over the course of a school year, since they are taking a more active interest in their learning and growth. As part of my first semester of student teaching, I designed a month-long unit utilizing backward design, culturally responsive teaching, and universal design for learning principles. As part of the unit, students analyzed democracy in Ancient Athens and compared it to democracy in the United States and around the world, with specific attention being paid to enduring issues, such as gender inequality, social class tensions, and access to free and fair elections. The culmination of the unit was a summative assessment in the form of a Socratic seminar, wherein students evaluated the health of democracy around the world. Ultimately, I want to prepare my students not only academically, by putting them in a good position to pass their standardized tests, but I also want to develop them practically, by preparing them to be civic-minded citizens. In short, by being a culturally responsive educator who crafts lessons that are engaging and relevant, I believe I can achieve my goals of being an effective teacher who engages his students and helps to develop their skills academically and practically.

I am currently in the process of completing an online 120 hour TEFL course in order to prepare me to teach English as a foreign language. I have a BA degree in English and German, due to one of my majors being German I took a semester off from university in 2017 to move to Germany, where I worked as an au pair in Munich for 3 months. During this time I took care of a 6 year old little boy and helped him with his English language learning. It was after this experience that I became certain that I wanted to pursue a career as an EFL teacher after university.

From September 2018 – December 2019 I worked as a nanny for a family with 3 children, 7 year old twin girls and their older brother who has Down Syndrome. This job involved picking the children up from school, preparing meals for them, helping them with homework, putting them to bed and minding them overnight when their mother had to take international trips for work. It was this job that verified my love for working with children and confirmed to me that I would like to be in a job where I am working with children in some capacity.

I have a great interest in foreign languages and cultures, hence why I chose to study German at university. Teaching English abroad allows me to combine two things I am very passionate about, by allowing me to work with children while immersing myself in another country's culture and language.

I have completed my bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2019, and I have a keen interest in child development. I believe this is beneficial when teaching children because I can adapt to each child’s needs in the classroom. I have 4-years experience in caring for children between the ages of 2 to 11 years old. This is beneficial because I am capable of handling a wide range of issues related to children, such as tantrums or fights between children. I also know how to engage a child's interest through activities that keep them entertained and happy to learn. I love to work with children and I have an endless amount of patience. While babysitting I worked with children who only spoke French and I helped the older children do their English homework.
I have a real desire to improve the lives of others by teaching English. I look forward to creating exciting and engaging lessons to motivate my students and help them to learn effectively. It would be a privilege to teach English and help students connect to English speaking parts of the world.

Through my previous position in Spain, I have experience in teaching students of all ages from 3-4 year old toddlers to professionals in their 40's and above. I also have previous experience of teaching new skills to young people through my background in The Scouts, and I am quite good at finding the balance between maintaining discipline and ensuring a fun environment that is conducive to learning.

My educational background is, in my opinion, another advantage. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in The Humanities, which included modules in Psychology, Philosophy, History, Literature, Theology, Drama and Media Studies: all of which require an ability to understand and consider the perspectives of others, as well as promoting generally creative and "outside the box" thinking. Additionally, I believe teaching is a performance art, and my background in theatre (see CV) is very useful in this regard.

Teaching is one of my great passions, and my philosophy says that the needs of the students must always come first. For this reason I am always kind and professional when dealing with pupils of any age, but I also do not tolerate any bad behaviour in my classroom, as this is ultimately not good either for the other students or even for the student who is misbehaving.
