SAT/AP Teachers

In my experience teaching in South Korea over the years, it seems that most students are not encouraged to speak their opinion due to the nature of the collectivist culture. However, with globalization, this is slowly changing through academia with foreigner interactions. At my current school among the different types of English classes: reading, writing, conversation, etc., debate classes are at the core of our conversation classes. In the debate classes, we instruct our students to not only communicate strategically, but we also train them to express meaning orally in interpersonal, transactional, formal and informal ways in form of recount, narrative, procedural, descriptive, analytical exposition, spoof, didactic explanation, and review in daily life. I believe that having more conversations through debate classes can help remove such cultural restrictions and make our upcoming scholars to become more adaptable to exercise their freedom of expression in a thought-provoking and engaging class which is a necessity in our changing world.

The coronavirus pandemic took all the teaching methods I had employed for nearly a decade and made me quickly adapt to online teaching—something I had never done before. At my current position at Sahmyook, the first job where I had to work with 11+ other foreigners, I learned the importance of teamwork and accepting criticisms in areas I could improve as a teacher. For example, though I work well with my students, I did not know how to organize or keep track of students’ concurrent progress online, which was a necessity through Zoom since teachers could no longer meet and teach students physically in the class. A co-worker introduced to me Class Dojo, a school communication platform that helped me organize students’ achievements, scores, and other related material readily available for parents/students to view. So, you will get an adaptable and now organized teacher that is great with communicating with a team of teachers and faculty amicably. Also, you will get an experienced teacher that knows how to teach students online through Zoom simultaneously along with physical students in class giving equal opportunity for all to participate. I think this is the first time in history classes were taught both online and offline at the same time and I'm glad to be apart of this challenging teaching era. I have grown in many ways because of this unique teaching experience.
This is a tangent to my strengths, but I believe it is important to have teachers that can relate to their students because oftentimes students have a hard time relating to teachers from different nations. I have been in South Korea for over a decade now, and as an educator, I am expected to do more than just share ideas, language skills, and their applications here and abroad. I have examined the challenges that Korean students face because I have worked in many of the institutions that they attend. Since I have witnessed their stress during testing and entrance exams, I am very understanding of their sensitive nature. I am also mindful of Korean etiquette and have a working knowledge and great command of the Korean language.

In my current profession as a Realtor, it is essential that I provide my clients with pertinent information and viable options about potential transactions (sale, purchase, and/or lease) to ensure that they make educated and confident decisions. My experience as a former SAT instructor and private tutor facilitates my ability to effectively communicate relevant points to my clients.

Furthermore, as I interact with many different personalities from all walks of life throughout my professional career, I have a personable character that is sensitive to the needs and wants of my clients.

Beyond endeavoring to ensure that my students learn the primary subject matter of the course, my objectives as a teacher are as follows: 1) to foster language acquisition that is applicable in day to day life: 2) to encourage critical thinking; 3) to facilitate the procurement of intercultural competency in cross cultural settings; and 4) to help cultivate lovers of knowledge. What’s more, my teaching philosophy is largely based on Constructivist teaching theory as well as the following three principles: 1) active student learning sturdily influences student-learning outcomes; 2) assessment processes strongly impact student procurement of knowledge; and 3) apposite encouragement and discipline nurtures education and fortifies positive student-teacher relationships. With the aim of meeting the aforementioned standards, my courses are designed to be collaborative, differentiated, and scaffolded, with a Constructivist (learners are actively involved in learning) foundation.

With my studies specializing in science, I am confident in my knowledge in scientific subjects as chemistry, biology, physics, and anatomy. I currently hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from St. John's University and I am in the process of completing a Master of Arts degree in Teaching Social Studies at New York University. Upon completion of my master's degree, I will be certified to teach social studies, history, and humanities in grades 5-12. I am interested in teaching at an international school because I believe I possess both the required pedagogical skills and content knowledge required to effectively contribute at such a school. In addition, I would love to expand my horizons by immersing myself in a foreign culture and continue to mature as an educator. Growing up in New York City, I experienced three distinct types of diverse school communities as a student: a standard public elementary school, a screened middle school, and a private high school. As a master's student at New York University, I have continued to learn about pedagogical methods and have put them into practice as a student teacher. As such, I believe I can bring a wide range of skills and ideas to any international school community, while also being open-minded myself and eager to learn.

As an emerging social studies teacher, I have a passion for teaching history, providing an engaging classroom experience, and helping my students grow and develop their skills, both academically and practically. Social studies have been a lifelong passion of mine; from the earliest age I can remember it was my favorite subject in school. That passion has continued into my adult life. As an undergraduate, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in History and I am currently completing a Master of Arts degree in Teaching Social Studies. I plan to continue to learn more about social studies and pedagogy, both formally and informally. In doing so, not only can I continue to hone my craft as an educator, but I can set an example for my students by exhibiting the type of lifelong learning that I want them to also attain.

During my first period of student teaching I experienced how rewarding it is to see students engaged in the learning process and develop their skills over the course of a semester. Naturally, the more students are engaged, the more they are going to develop over the course of a school year, since they are taking a more active interest in their learning and growth. As part of my first semester of student teaching, I designed a month-long unit utilizing backward design, culturally responsive teaching, and universal design for learning principles. As part of the unit, students analyzed democracy in Ancient Athens and compared it to democracy in the United States and around the world, with specific attention being paid to enduring issues, such as gender inequality, social class tensions, and access to free and fair elections. The culmination of the unit was a summative assessment in the form of a Socratic seminar, wherein students evaluated the health of democracy around the world. Ultimately, I want to prepare my students not only academically, by putting them in a good position to pass their standardized tests, but I also want to develop them practically, by preparing them to be civic-minded citizens. In short, by being a culturally responsive educator who crafts lessons that are engaging and relevant, I believe I can achieve my goals of being an effective teacher who engages his students and helps to develop their skills academically and practically.

I am an enthusiastic person with a love for the subjects that I teach and a passion for education. I have almost a decade of experience teaching students of varying backgrounds and skill levels.

I have taught students in both a private capacity as a tutor as well as in the classroom (both academy and public school). I have a stubborn streak and dislike giving up on my students.
