I have studied abroad most of my life and so I know what it is like to start from scratch, to learn new languages and to overcome many challenges. I had to learn English, Spanish and Korean to survive and now I am fluent in four languages. It was tough but now I am enjoying the rewards of being multi-lingual and multi-cultural.

Having survived myself such challenges, I feel that I am poised to help those who face similar challenges, that is students who face a new country, a new language, culture and school.

I like to help but also be tough because I discover that teachers, parents and friends are "easy going" and thus not helpful.

At Paedea English Academy, I have mainly taught writing, grammar and vocabulary to students in
grades 3-7. Although there was a set curriculum, substantial preparation was required
to enrich the experience so that students could learn effectively, and in an enjoyable
manner. As a result of my efforts, I have been able to win the trust and respect of the
majority of my students over the past year, playing a significant role in developing
their English skills.

Before Paedea, I worked as an education pastor in the United States for nearly five
years, teaching K-12, college, and even adult students/congregants in various settings,
including lecture and discussion. I have led countless in-depth discussions regarding a
plethora of issues, and have become quite adept at initiating and sustaining a
productive discussion. All of this was conducted at a very personal level and in the
process, I have built strong relationships which last to this day.

I am well versed in various subjects including, but not limited to: economics, politics, biology, chemistry, theology and technology.

I have been accepted to a dental school in the U.S. and will be starting this fall.

I truly believe that there is a stark difference between growing up and growth. Of
course, everyone does grow up, that's biologically inevitable; but the way we see the world
and how we interact, react and our daily choices are a direct result of our personal growth.
As a graduate of Communication Studies and English, I can attest to the fact that English
learning does not stop once the bell rings. After school programs, coupled with the material
covered in class and self-studying English can truly accumulate into a much richer
experience, understanding and love of the language.

As a current native English teacher, I believe a successful teacher holds the three S's
of teaching English. The first being structure; a solid foundation is literally the building
blocks of anything in the world. A solid education will take an individual far. Similarly, a
solid understanding of English grammar and spelling will be tremendously helpful as one
progresses into more challenging areas of the language. The second S is selling. The
teacher must use various techniques, mediums and real-life examples to truly make English
applicable to their students. If not, the pupil will soon become bored and not see the many
real-life applicable skills the language holds. The final S is serendipity; make everything a
teachable moment for both the student and teacher. This can range from a conflict
amongst students to a poorly received test. A setback, in life or in the classroom, is merely
a learning curb.

As a previous English tutor, to both international students and native English speakers,
I have learned 50% of teaching is observing. I was able to pick up on things that the
regular professors may have missed or did not have time to address; problems such as
proper pronunciation or local cultural references that may go over some student's heads. I
was able to sit down and in detail explain what each sentence meant and have them repeat
it back. A common recurring problem for ESL students was they never used English in a
practical setting or never had a chance to speak. So, I would talk with them about
homework and their daily lives. It was to solidify the importance of English in their
everyday lives. Additionally, I would use Canadian pop-culture items, like magazine, to give
the students a more fully rounded understanding of the language.

Lastly, as a former marketing executive and social media rep, I understand the
importance of getting a very vital message across to a large number of people. One must
make the content interesting, visually appealing and give some of incentive as to why the
audience should play attention. This is why English content outside the classroom should
touch various topics that are not covered in school. For example, the effect Korean culture
has on the world and how foreigners perceive Korea. This gives the individual a new
perspective of Korea and the rest of the world.

I had to move around different countries throughout adolescence. I lived about 6 years (Grade 4 to Grade 9) in Houston Texas, and spent about 5 years (grade 11 to 3rd year in Trinity Western University) in Canada. During the time between U.S. and Canada, I had the privilege to learn Korean language and culture more back in Korea. I also got to experience the competitive academic learning atmosphere in well-renowned Ansan Dongsan High School. I did not enjoy the strenuous studying schedule from 7:30am to 10pm every day, but I realized later that this highly competitive environment taught me the academic discipline I needed to achieve further and strengthened my ability to speak and understand Korean at an academic level. I maintained my hard work when I went to Canada. I was able to finish Canadian High School with 90%+ average on all my courses, and achieved 3.81/4.3 overall GPA in my previous university before I received the offer from University of Queensland in Australia for their dentistry program. I believe I have achieved academic success despite my long journey of moving abroad to multiple countries. I have also done my Army service as a proud Korean man, in which I learned to be disciplined as a grown-up. I have an extensive full time/part time working experience in a number of different English academy settings. Moreover, I know I am great with kids. I know how to strictly enforce the rules to bring out the best in each of them yet still be reasonable, impartial, and fair in the way I treat them. Moreover, being bilingual and having experienced both the Korean and North American culture, I can educate them in English adequately and still be approachable for communication in Korean so that students and I are always on the same page without any misunderstanding or misjudgments. I am in need for money to save up as much as I can to pay for the dentistry program, which starts next year. I will display the best possible conduct as a teacher. Thank you for reading.

I am an energetic individual with a love for learning and life as a student. Over the past year in various programs, I have been fortunate enough to assume the classroom role of instructor and make information accessible to my students. I have a strong understanding of teaching English as a foreign language and the difficulties associated with mastering a second language. Although my experience is primarily in ESL teaching, I also have a degree in science with a thorough understanding of all the subdivisions of science and their associated curriculum.

I am a recent graduate of Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. I grew up in New Zealand since I was four years old and attended an American boarding school. Therefore, I have experience with the boarding school and college application processes in the United States. I am also very familiar with the career recruiting processes in the consulting and banking industries. I will be joining Deloitte US this May.

While I have no professional teaching experience, I have had several client-facing jobs, which required clear communication skills. I am also comfortable with presenting to a large crowd of people due to the numerous presentations I gave during my time at the business school.

Ahlo: Korea: The Pennsylvania State University: Aug 01, 2018

Ahlo: Korea: The Pennsylvania State University: Aug 01, 2018

To Whom It May Concern,

It would be an honored for me to tell you my story. Initially, I pursued a major in Marketing at Smeal College of Business at Pennsylvania State University. However after graduation from college, I pursued a different career path based on my specialty and interests, which was to become a teacher. Since college graduation on December 2015, I had been preparing for teaching license, and I eventually obtained a mathematics teaching license on September 2017.

I am excited to get involved with a school that values every single member of the school supporting every student. My personal experiences in student teaching, academic tutoring, working at academy as a teacher, and even working as a marketing manager at an international school, have all taught me the importance of connecting with students and challenging to continually grow as a teacher.

Much of my success I believe stems from my personal and work experiences. As an international student for 8 years in the United States, I have learned how to embrace people from all different cultures and backgrounds and communicate with people from different backgrounds. It was a valuable experience that greatly influences my decisions personally and professionally. During my college years, I did a few internships at companies in Korea for summer break. Being a part of community or group has steered me to becoming responsible and loyal person. In addition, I have realized how significant it is to work in groups.

I would like to highlight the teaching experiences that have helped me grow as a teacher. First, I partnered with a tutoring services for students in grades ranging from elementary to eleventh grade in mathematics and English courses. Thanks to my natural talent and passion for teaching, I was able to teach students and prepare to become a teacher. This experience was while I was preparing to obtain my teaching license. Besides tutoring, I also worked at academy as a teacher. It was very helpful experience to learn how to manage and motivate students in class.

Before obtaining a teaching license in 2017, I completed my student teaching at Korea Foreign School (previously known as Rainbow International School) for three months as a MYP (Middle Years Programme) Mathematics teacher. By teaching students from grades sixth to eighth, I learned how to effectively make lesson plans and set up a student-centered learning environment. Even though it was short period of time, I learned many skills required from becoming an excellent teacher. Next, I transitioned to a position as a marketing manager. This job opportunity was a beneficial experience for me to understand each of students’ and parents’ expectations from school. Additionally, I became aware of the importance of communication among everyone involved in school. Through these experiences that mentioned above, I have acquired valuable opportunities to improve myself.

I do hope this letter effectively outlines my qualifications for this position, and I look forward to having opportunity to discuss my resume, and the more personal experiences, I believe will benefit your school should we decide to work together this next year.

Sincerely,

Thy Quang: Australia: Deakin University: Feb 05, 2018

Thy Quang: Australia: Deakin University: Feb 05, 2018

To whom it may concern,

I would like to express my interest in this advertised role.

I am currently living in Korea and have recently just completed my Instructor and Curriculum Developer role at YBM Adult Institute in Seoul. I currently work as a freelancer, teaching business and conversational English at GCS Institute in Seoul. Also, I was an elementary school teacher at Anyang Elementary School (안양초등학교) in Gyeonggi Province. Initially, I applied through EPIK (English Program in Korea run by the Korean Ministry of Education) and was successful for a previous teaching role with Aron Elementary School (어론초등학교) in Gangwon Province (which I commenced from August 2013 and finished August 2014).

I am a native speaker of Australian English; I was born in Darwin, Australia and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I have been educated in primary, secondary, and tertiary schools located in Melbourne – please refer to my CV for more information. Aside from my years of experience teaching ESL English geared towards elementary school students as well as adults, my past work experiences have allowed me to develop and maintain a professional demeanor, attitude, appearance, and ability to conduct oneself in a manner befitting the environment.

As I have completed undergraduate tertiary studies – a Bachelor of Arts majoring in the criminology field (alongside my other major – sociology), I have been provided with analytical skills in relation to designing and conducting criminological research; particularly when it comes to researching specific case studies and then applying those studies alongside critical thinking to formulate arguments in order to relate them to criminological issues such as crime prevention (whether it would be in the social or environmental preventative framework), explaining causes of criminality (whether it would relate to sociological and/or psychological theories), the discussion of prisons and the concepts of imprisonment as a criminal deterrent, and issues of transnational law enforcement.

I believe interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to construct rapport amongst other individuals, are paramount when it comes to organizing and producing high-quality results. I believe education and other work/life experiences have certainly developed my “active listening” skills, thus I have achieved consistent and high grades/results. This achievement required a great understanding of developing written communication skills in order to support critical and analytical thinking for the development of arguments.

One of many academic assessments involved criminological psychology research in relation to critical thinking and the formation of arguments in relation to offenders in prison – whether prisoners should receive rehabilitation or punitive punishment. Many steps were undertaken to ensure my written piece was properly done; including the development of researching skills, responding to key arguments, and enhancing academic writing and correspondence – using clear, concise and understandable language.

My past experiences in the security industry made me develop and improve my verbal communication skills, particularly for utilizing customer service abilities to patrons. Aside from security duties conducted, we are seen as ‘walking concierge desks’ – an expectation to deliver quality and efficient information to patrons in need of location whereabouts and general inquiries.

As I mentioned in the resume, I was a former instructor of ESL (English as a second language) to non-English speakers and also developed curricula at YBM, a renowned adult-geared ESL education company and institute in Seoul, Korea. During my current employment there, I gained professional experience in terms of helping Korean adult English-speakers here improve, refine, and implement confidence in themselves to engage in spoken English during classes. This is a stark contrast to when I was teaching English in elementary/primary schools, where it was more about classroom management, discipline, and simply trying to make English a fun experience for the students.

ESL teaching, specifically Adult-based teaching, provides a platform to express different cultural barriers between Western and Korean/Asian culture – although I already had a high understanding of the Korean culture and language prior to coming to Korea. Many adult students were interested in my background; especially since I am an Australian or Vietnamese heritage, and some were even curious to know how and why I can speak Korean. Because of this, I felt it was a rewarding professional achievement in terms of connecting and establishing great rapport/communication – which is highly pertinent in any teaching job over actual English grammatical corrections and/or learning about English expressions. Similarly, my primary/elementary ESL teaching experiences involved a lot of communication with the children not only just professionally, but also on a personal level as well. It felt very rewarding because it was almost like babysitting and allowed me to develop better relationships with children (something I wasn’t really great at before coming to Korea).

My overall experiences in verbal communication, as well as experiences in written communication which developed my problem-solving and analytical/critical thinking abilities, have all given me a high understanding of communicating and working effectively with other people – particularly building rapport, cooperating and communicating effectively within a team; and to achieve driven, committed, and specific planning and goals – which I believe will be fundamental to the duties of providing assistance, teamwork contribution amongst colleagues, as well as an adaptation to various responsibilities required in this role I’m applying for.

Please carefully consider my application.

Regards,

Thy (Tyson) Q Linh

I have several years total teaching experience primarily in the areas of ESL, and guitar. My private students' needs entailed a wide variety subjects including History, Psychology, Math, Music as well as test preparation for both Ielts and Toefl examinations. My personality can best be described as warm and friendly but also detail oriented. I have been told that I have a unique skill to quickly build a rapport with my students even if there is a large language and cultural barrier. I am patient and I do not believe that the student should always know the answer but that they should be able to find the answer when learning.
