Ruth: United States: University of Washington: Jun 28, 2018

My name is Ruth Son and I am a Korean American born in Portland, Oregon, USA and currently residing in Everett, Washington, USA. I am interested in the SAT/ACT/AP/IB Instructor. I am confident I have the skills, experience, and dedicated commitment needed for this position.

My passion for teaching developed as I tutored academically and economically challenged students, and witnessed the excitement that comes from learning and the satisfaction of students realizing their ability to succeed in learning. Now, with over 6 years of experience teaching/tutoring, I have developed a strong dedication to teaching and learning. My constant emphasis on learning fostered a desire to pursue a career filled with learning.

I tutor to allow students to understand by learning and not by memorizing. My qualifications from high school and first year at the University of Washington may be lacking, but over the past 6 years I have improved in my ability to learn and to teach. I have spent numerous additional hours reviewing and re-learning math and chemistry concepts from middle school, high school, university, SAT/ACT, and AP/IB exams. I am familiar with most high school and college math textbooks and have solved through almost all the SAT/ACT books available in the current market. By dedicating time to my own learning, I understand the power of education and the necessity to constantly learn. My dedication to learning is what makes me a great candidate – I am willing to spend additional hours to learn and teach to further the learning of students. If I may be lacking requisite knowledge or skills in certain areas, I am willing to study in my own time to learn and compensate for my inadequacies.

I am eager to apply my background and strengths to assist in the work being done. I am extremely flexible with my schedule would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to further discuss how my qualifications match this position.

Seunghyeon: Canada: Simon Fraser University: Mar 01, 2018

I was once an international student who had difficulty studying in English. Later I overcame this difficulty by improving my English and successfully finished my business administration programme in Simon Fraser University, Canada. With this personal background, I have always been interested in helping students from non-English speaking countries’ cultural backgrounds to improve their English. Thus, when I saw this job posting, I immediately felt compelled to apply for the position.

In addition, I have been studying some languages. Hence, I can speak three languages now; I speak Korean and English fluently, and Spanish to an extent that I can conduct regular daily conversation. Therefore, I do have know-how(s) in learning a new language, especially in learning English. As a matter of fact, I received a C+ from Academic Writing in 2013 in Douglas College but this year, I received an A+ from International Human Resource Management from Simon Fraser University; I received 26 out of 30 on my paper, which was one of the highest scores in the entire class. Thus, I can use my language study experience for Herald Language College’s students

Kevin: United States: University of Southern California: May 01, 2018

I graduated at California Polytechnic University, Pomona with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics. After graduating, I studied to become an actuary while working at an after school and at a general contracting company. After passing few actuarial exams, I started applying but did not get accepted anywhere due the high demands of entry level positions. So, I decided to get a masters in education and a teacher credential to become a math teacher.

My favorite class in high school was my Calculus BC class. This class inspired me to pursue mathematics and teach mathematics.

Jong: Korea: Harvard University (MA) UC Berkeley (BA): Feb 01, 2018

I have studied abroad most of my life and so I know what it is like to start from scratch, to learn new languages and to overcome many challenges. I had to learn English, Spanish and Korean to survive and now I am fluent in four languages. It was tough but now I am enjoying the rewards of being multi-lingual and multi-cultural.

Having survived myself such challenges, I feel that I am poised to help those who face similar challenges, that is students who face a new country, a new language, culture and school.

I like to help but also be tough because I discover that teachers, parents and friends are "easy going" and thus not helpful.

Paul: United States: University of California, Berkeley: Feb 26, 2018

At Paedea English Academy, I have mainly taught writing, grammar and vocabulary to students in
grades 3-7. Although there was a set curriculum, substantial preparation was required
to enrich the experience so that students could learn effectively, and in an enjoyable
manner. As a result of my efforts, I have been able to win the trust and respect of the
majority of my students over the past year, playing a significant role in developing
their English skills.

Before Paedea, I worked as an education pastor in the United States for nearly five
years, teaching K-12, college, and even adult students/congregants in various settings,
including lecture and discussion. I have led countless in-depth discussions regarding a
plethora of issues, and have become quite adept at initiating and sustaining a
productive discussion. All of this was conducted at a very personal level and in the
process, I have built strong relationships which last to this day.

I am well versed in various subjects including, but not limited to: economics, politics, biology, chemistry, theology and technology.

I have been accepted to a dental school in the U.S. and will be starting this fall.

I truly believe that there is a stark difference between growing up and growth. Of
course, everyone does grow up, that's biologically inevitable; but the way we see the world
and how we interact, react and our daily choices are a direct result of our personal growth.
As a graduate of Communication Studies and English, I can attest to the fact that English
learning does not stop once the bell rings. After school programs, coupled with the material
covered in class and self-studying English can truly accumulate into a much richer
experience, understanding and love of the language.

As a current native English teacher, I believe a successful teacher holds the three S's
of teaching English. The first being structure; a solid foundation is literally the building
blocks of anything in the world. A solid education will take an individual far. Similarly, a
solid understanding of English grammar and spelling will be tremendously helpful as one
progresses into more challenging areas of the language. The second S is selling. The
teacher must use various techniques, mediums and real-life examples to truly make English
applicable to their students. If not, the pupil will soon become bored and not see the many
real-life applicable skills the language holds. The final S is serendipity; make everything a
teachable moment for both the student and teacher. This can range from a conflict
amongst students to a poorly received test. A setback, in life or in the classroom, is merely
a learning curb.

As a previous English tutor, to both international students and native English speakers,
I have learned 50% of teaching is observing. I was able to pick up on things that the
regular professors may have missed or did not have time to address; problems such as
proper pronunciation or local cultural references that may go over some student's heads. I
was able to sit down and in detail explain what each sentence meant and have them repeat
it back. A common recurring problem for ESL students was they never used English in a
practical setting or never had a chance to speak. So, I would talk with them about
homework and their daily lives. It was to solidify the importance of English in their
everyday lives. Additionally, I would use Canadian pop-culture items, like magazine, to give
the students a more fully rounded understanding of the language.

Lastly, as a former marketing executive and social media rep, I understand the
importance of getting a very vital message across to a large number of people. One must
make the content interesting, visually appealing and give some of incentive as to why the
audience should play attention. This is why English content outside the classroom should
touch various topics that are not covered in school. For example, the effect Korean culture
has on the world and how foreigners perceive Korea. This gives the individual a new
perspective of Korea and the rest of the world.

I had to move around different countries throughout adolescence. I lived about 6 years (Grade 4 to Grade 9) in Houston Texas, and spent about 5 years (grade 11 to 3rd year in Trinity Western University) in Canada. During the time between U.S. and Canada, I had the privilege to learn Korean language and culture more back in Korea. I also got to experience the competitive academic learning atmosphere in well-renowned Ansan Dongsan High School. I did not enjoy the strenuous studying schedule from 7:30am to 10pm every day, but I realized later that this highly competitive environment taught me the academic discipline I needed to achieve further and strengthened my ability to speak and understand Korean at an academic level. I maintained my hard work when I went to Canada. I was able to finish Canadian High School with 90%+ average on all my courses, and achieved 3.81/4.3 overall GPA in my previous university before I received the offer from University of Queensland in Australia for their dentistry program. I believe I have achieved academic success despite my long journey of moving abroad to multiple countries. I have also done my Army service as a proud Korean man, in which I learned to be disciplined as a grown-up. I have an extensive full time/part time working experience in a number of different English academy settings. Moreover, I know I am great with kids. I know how to strictly enforce the rules to bring out the best in each of them yet still be reasonable, impartial, and fair in the way I treat them. Moreover, being bilingual and having experienced both the Korean and North American culture, I can educate them in English adequately and still be approachable for communication in Korean so that students and I are always on the same page without any misunderstanding or misjudgments. I am in need for money to save up as much as I can to pay for the dentistry program, which starts next year. I will display the best possible conduct as a teacher. Thank you for reading.
